Before he was a judge he was a soldier. Served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Spent the brutal winter of 1777-78 at Valley Forge with Washington.

I knew about Marbury v Madison (I used to teach government!), but not about his service. Wow. That makes his life, and his court decisions, so much more valuable. Not a lightweight. Someone who invested in the new country in the most meaningful way.
