Another fascinating article. Thank you for that bit of history (about the Egyptians). It's curious that they are only averse to artificial light. Maybe they are adapting to humans (we tend to squash them when we see them). Probably not but possible :)

They do seem to be essential decomposers, and much more wholesome than flies because of their limited diet. Are you likely to find fly larvae and coleoptera larvae in the same excrement? If so, would they compete for the resource?

Well, I guess we need flies also...We need just about every living thing don't we, although flies do present a danger to humans.
