I'm so sorry for your mother. That's a terrible thing to live with. I had a disabled brother...he was a twin who suffered brain damage at birth. His older (by 15 minutes) identical twin was fine. Doctors messed up. So I know how this sort of tragedy affects everyone in the family-- deeply.
