Rohingya refugee crisis the worst in recent history
This post is a little different from the articles I usually write about Crypto Currency’s and investment markets. It is an issue that has moved me personally on a significant level and something which I would like to raise awareness of as much as possible. This is a cause which the Steemit community could rally around and make a significant difference to the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves.
The following article from the Australian newspaper, The Sydney Morning Herald, lays out in brutal detail the harrowing experiences of a people who some describe as the most persecuted ethnic minority in the world.
To quote directly from the article
More than 655,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar's Rakhine state since August 25, the day the country's army launched systematic attacks on Rohingya villages in what the United Nations calls "text-book ethnic cleansing" and "very likely" crimes against humanity.
Having survived the alleged brutality of their own country's military forces, tens of thousands of men, women and children are now at risk of death daily from malnutrition and disease.
If every Steemian was to donate the equivalent of 1 SBD to this cause, then thousands of lives could potentially be saved. The very essence of the crypto revolution is to take power away from the elites and put it back in the hands of the common woman and man. This situation is the perfect example of how this newfound influence could be put to use for the good of those who have fallen victim to atrocities that many of us, fortunately, have difficulty even imagining, and hopefully will never have to face.
