at The AirField
The Airfield lies on a district road just out of town from Empangeni towards the Nseleni settlement, though still in use by some, the airfield has seen better days. I think after big corporations took over most of the cane farms, farmers didn't need planes to look over their crops as much anymore. Either that or people moved their planes to the more modern Richardsbay Airport. Either way the old main hangar and clubhouse are dilapidated and worn by time...
this plane has been standing here for quite some time now, like the hangar behind it, father time and mother nature have taken their toll....
another angle, a mango tree grows out the side of the hangar...
another angle
the old hangar, for a while after closing, youths would come here and have parties until the sun came up..
a look down at old precast structures dilapidated, at the end a newer sink private hangar
weathered by time...
north facing side looks a bit better...
an old spray booth with airhose still hanging...
workbay area next to spraybooth
more inside...
door to old offices...
1st office...
back office with old map of South-Africa still on the wall...
a view to outside....
side of the hangar
side angle
another newer private hangar...
the abandoned clubhouse, with another private hangar next to it.
everything is just left to grow...
and nature will reclaim if you leave her be
the back of the abandoned clubhouse
even though the runway is still in use, by a couple private owners, cropdusters, and for medical drops once a week. there is talk of a new airport being built outside of town. so I'm not sure if this one will stay open, or be worked into the new residential development across the road.
these little wildflowers where all over the runway....
I have since learned that the area mentioned in my previous abandoned places post from a month ago, is being upgraded and fixed to be put back in use for tourism again. I think they are going to overhaul it completely though....will have to go past there at some point again.
