Yearly, tens of thousands of students sit for different examination across the country. Such examination may be SSCE, NECO, GCE, JAMB/UTME, POST UTME, ICAN, ACCA or any other professional exams. it has always turned out that only very handful candidates do excel while few do pass moderately and a host of candidates always fail.
Very primary to the habit of success is to understand the causes of failure and brace up to eliminate them.
Causes of failure
(1) Poor Study Habit
This tops the chart among the various causes of failure at school. Very often, students in elementary and secondary schools are seldom taught how to study . The bad study habits they cultivated in the elementary schools which are not corrected are then transferred to higher institutions.
(2) Ignorance of Principles of Success
sucess in any endeavours, including education is based on fundamental universal laws and principles which must not be violated. Some of these principles include:
- Principles of time management
- Law of cause and effect.
- Paretto Principle or 20/80 Rule
- Principle of diligence and delay gratification.
- Law of memory
- Principle of goal setting, planning and organized study.
(3) Social Distraction and priority Misplacement
Failure is inevitable when students drift attentions to other activities that are irrelevant or did not contribute to their primary objectives of being in the school.
(4) Peer Pressure
Companies kept by students have propensities to make or mar their performance at school and in life. Peers denote:Pals who encourage Excellence, Rectitude and Success. If a wrong company,peers according to Carson, are people who encourage Error and Rudeness. Evil association corrupt good manners.
(5) Laziness and Procrastination
Laziness is the habit of resting before one is tired while procrastination is the habit of pushing forward what ought to be done now. This duo can cripple academic success if permitted by the students.
Other causes of exam failure are excuse making,blame shifting,ill health,lack of finance, bad study habit, inadequate preparation for exam, wrong understanding of examiners demands and many more.
Bad Study Habits
Reading is the basis for acquisition of information and knowledge. And since better reading habit is intriguingly connected to acquiring knowledge, it is very essential that student avoid any habits that will be counter-productive to assimilative reading. Some bad study habits include:
- Studying late for exam.
- Studying in a poor illuminated environment.
- Placing ones table beside the door or any center of distraction.
- Lying on bed while reading.
- Studying with the aid of stimulants e.g Kolanut,
- Studying with heavy music at the background.
- Learning by rote i.e reading by writing.
- Eating and chewing while reading.
- Studying irrelevant materials.
- Reading for very long hours at a stretch.
- Studying without jotting.
Mistakes is when you repeat the same error.
