"Two dogs strive for a bone, and the third runs away with it"
Dear Adrealm community,
Why do we need trust?
A century before Leonardo Da Vinci started contemplating his image in the mirror, amazed by the symmetry of his face, Italian merchants and bankers were focusing less on symmetry and more on the linear recording of transactions and payments, thus creating the record-keeping books - double-entry bookkeeping - that were destined to stay in use and evolve till the contemporary age (ah, these Italians).
Bankers became middlemen, monetary record-keeping books became a praiseworthy tool and a moral obligation (rescuing them from the analogy bankers - usurers), and we became customers, trading not only assets but also trust.
The utterly important role of the intermediary sealed the vision that had been already put forward by Aristoteles or Confucius, i.e. the idea of the virtuous center, which would have offset benefits with liability, which would have preserved the balance between parties while becoming the embodiment of trust.
But hadn't the Greek fabulist Aesop already mentioned that
Tra I due litiganti, il terzo gode
or
Two dogs strive for a bone, and the third runs away with it?
The insightful article published on the MIT Technology Review focuses on the importance of trust, tracing it back to the 14th century and advancing the hypothesis that blockchain as a "triple-entry bookkeeping" could "unhinge" the system of delicate trust we've based our business on for centuries and provoke an epochal shift from centralization to decentralization.
Starting from the assumption that the role of intermediaries cannot be completely eradicated - and should it? - we've decided to inaugurate this week's updates with this thoughtful article on trust since this specific virtue played a specific role during our last week.
And because, well, "In blockchain we trust".
