When you were making a review, did you factor in where the story was based from? It's origins are darker that Disney did several changes to make it a children's story. The step mother and step sister motivations felt real enough.

I do agree with you on several points. But I can excuse some areas about the story as this was made at a time when theories about childhood perceived children as pure. Disney just created a movie(s) that suited their perceived audience.
