I've been monitoring the stats for the past few months with @hiveph and a big shout out to
@wittyzell for maintaining the bot's functionalities.
The social experiment was trying to see how the community would behave if they were given enough freedom to use the pooled community stake for curation. Will they be more selfish? will they be more giving towards other members of the community?
At HivePH, we got an account called @hivephilippines that pools community stake for curation and gives out delegation rewards much like most community curation bots except this one is more centered on the Filipino community.
Rules:
Access to the #voteme channel is available to HivePH members (bearing the Hayahay Role). They could trigger the vote on their own posts, other HivePH members posts, posts related to the Philippines, posts made by other non-member Filipinos, and special posts on a case to case basis. These are treated more as guidelines rather than absolute rules in practice.
Self Count:
Refers to the number of times the user has triggered the community account to vote on their own posts.
Others Count:
Refers to the number of times the user has triggered the community account to vote on other people's post.
The commands to pull up these stats on discord are accessible to any member at the #voteme channel, it's intentionally made possible so that members can examine other member's vote usage rather than a privilege exclusive for admin view.
I've expected seeing users having a self:others ratio near 1:1 ratio. It was like that during the early days until more emphasis was made to distribute the votes for other people.
If you can use the community stake to get a free vote daily, it doesn't cost you to give the same benefit and curate someone else in the community while browsing on Hive. It's not your VP that's being use, it's the community resources.
Part of the experiment was seeing how receptive people can be at paying the favor forward.
If they see the community stake being used for the common good and built up by the people that contribute to its value, maybe people can be receptive to the idea that it everyone can still win being a team player than be engrossed about their own wins.
My Findings:
There are 4 names on the top 10 that are working as a community staff, and all those 4 names have a higher others > self ratio.
Being a staff gives members a higher vote weight by default and it's understandable that a staff could post daily and use the privilege frequently up to a 1:1 ratio but what I see is a ratio that has others > self even amongst non-staff members. But this is only the top ten, as I go further to top 30, the results beyond are mixed from 1:1, to self > others.
What's remarkable about seeing names on the list that have a high others > self ratio is that these people are showing behaviors that reflect what Bayanihan is really about. There are no substantial incentives for triggering the vote for others, the recipients probably wouldn't know you triggered it for them, most people wouldn't really check the #voteme channel to see who's being a team player, it's a thank less task most of the time and yet some members actually bother to spend a small fraction of their Hive time going out of their way to curate other people.
If I wanted proof that community stake isn't being abused and used by staff for self enrichment reasons, these are the stats I'd be using along with the regular monthly reports we've been publishing about how we use community funds. One can argue we take some portion from the earnings as staff incentives but bitch please, members of the staff individually, can earn just fine on their own and don't need the headache to run the community, just saying~
I think most Filipinos expecting to hop into the server or users joining the community expect that membership is easy. It is but you have to be really good at getting along with others to get there and that's something not most wouldn't think is worthwhile doing because if votes are the only motivation one has for joining, they are just going to get disappointed.
Most members have been on Hive long enough to sniff out fake engagement and this makes it more difficult for characters with sus vibes to get in the club but not for people with genuine intentions.
Are these numbers really as good as they appear? No. I've already said beyond top 10, the user behavior changes to a more or less what you expect from how an average Hiver would behave. What's good about the current stats is that for the most part, most of the votes are used actively by users that really do look out for other members in the community.
I don't think judging people who have high self > others ratio quickly is the right way to go. These are just indicators, numbers that can be interpreted differently under different contexts. If I prefer to just max out whatever free benefits I can take from the system, I'd definitely be looking out for my own more and there is a system that enables me to do it so I use it. Game is game. And we can use Hive for different reasons, doesn't mean we have to be obligated to pretend that it's all altruistic reasons.
Penalties:
Having a high self > others ratio shows user behavior isn't really in tune with the Bayanihan spirit I wanted to promote. Restricting access isn't the first thing that comes to mind because I believe this should be the last resort. I'd rather just reduce the voting weights they receive for the self votes without affecting the vote weights they give if they decided to use the votes for others. And this is in proportion to how bad their ratio shows.
Let's say a user has 15 self : 4 others ratio, this tells me out of 15 days, they only thought of voting others 4x. There's trigger limit for voting others as long as there's enough VP available. I'm not a sniper that waits for people to technically have bad metrics to punish, I wait for these behaviors to show on their own chronically. If people don't develop an insight that this privilege is a tool to share for others and not just a self enriching tool, it's better to reward others that actually paid attention to the assignment.
The play it safe mode was just voting your own daily posts and 1 other post to keep things at 1:1 ratio. This was the bare minimum lazy and neutral way to approach things while maximizing the benefit. But what I see in practice are the top users mostly favoring to use the community stake for others than their own posts.
That's one of the reasons why having "roles" in the server also includes having side perks. We have Espiritu (Spirits), Sirena (Mermaids), Diwata (Fae) and Bakunawa (Moon Eating Dragon) as themes with corresponding vote weights. The owners of these roles not only trigger a higher vote weight for their own posts but also the posts they chose to reward for other community members. So the more helpful someone is, the more they "rank up" to give more.
I've emphasized how no one else obligated to delegate to @hivephilippines just to have access to free votes, they just need to be friends with the people existing within the community that are members and those members vouch for their membership via voting system. They can just keep existing as members without doing anything or just not bother getting involved with HivePH and let some existing member from the group trigger the votes on their posts.
You want to be part of this community? make friends with the people in it.
Thanks for your time.
