How old are flowers? - Flowers appeared on Earth about 130 million years ago, in the Cretaceous period. If we consider the age of our planet, 4.5 billion years as an hour, the flowering plants only appeared in the last 90 seconds. It took another 30 to 40 millIon years however for their numbers to explode. The reason for that explosion? The flower petals. Early flowers had no petals, and when these finally appeared, it helped to lure pollinating insects by huge numbers, resulting in flowers spreading like wildfire.
