Student loan have been of a great benefits to so many Nigerians. Though I don't know about other countries how it works there. But for here it is what so many students pray for.
MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH STUDENTS LOAN
Two years ago my three children got admission at the same time to different universities in Nigeria: one is in jos, another in Mina and the third in Zaria. For that first year we went through a lot trying to send them to school. In fact at first I pleaded with them to allow maybe one of two person to go ahead of others so that the financial burden won't be too much on us. But it didn't work because they told me that getting admission now in Nigeria does not come with easy like before. Is possible for one person to let the admission go just to allow the others start and then when is time to write another jamb the admission may not work and that person can stay for four years waiting for admission and write jamb over and over again. So after so many consideration, we decided to allow three of them accept their admissions.
We had to source for money from different individuals so that we can send them all to school and at the end of the day we couldn't get much help from people. We had to send them with the little we have and it affected them negatively because education needs a lot of money. But I was so surprised when one of them called me and told me that she will apply for student loan so that she can use the money to clear what is remaining to be paid for in school. At first I did not understand until when the first money came. She was so happy that she called me to inform me about it and she had already used part of the money to get some things done in school. After some months she called me again and told me that her school fees has been returned by the federal government because of the loan she applied for. It came as a relief because at that time we needed that money to reduce some of our debt. It came as a great relief for the whole family. Next the second person applied and got the students loan, the third person also applied and it came. The three students are all in 300 hundred level now because they just wrote their 200 level last exams and when they go back to school it will be straight to 300 level. It has really helped us with all the school fees and other registration. All we send to them is to help augument what they already have.
IT IS LIKE A SAVIOR TO SOME STUDENTS WHO SHOULD HAVE DROPPED OUT OF SCHOOL.
My take on the topic is that it should be paid through different taxes because from every family in Nigeria one or two students are really enjoying the students loan. So it won't be out of place if we are asked to pay that through taxes. I also think that the federal government should wave it off because that student loan is meant only for citizens of the country I don't think that is bad when the students benefits some small from the federal government. It is also their rights because they said that every child has the right to education. When it becomes very had for parents to sponsor their children to school that right has been denied in a way and the government can step in to make sure that child get the right to education.
This is my way of dropping my view on the topic for week 237e3.
