It’s amazing how technological advances lead you to buy all kinds of equipment; some of it is, let’s say, a whim or a luxury, depending on how you use it; in other cases, it’s a necessity. For Venezuelans, having options to stay connected in the face of power outages has become vital; with that in mind, I bought a mini UPS.
Now, three years ago in this post, I featured a UPS that my husband had lying around; we bought a new battery for it to keep it operational. Although it’s still working, since it’s an older model and has so many devices connected to it, it only lasts about an hour, which gives you enough time to save any work you might be doing on the computer. But to keep the modem and router running longer, I wanted something that would last more hours during a power outage.
With that in mind, I purchased the SPIDERTEC 1021P MINI UPS. As many already know, mini UPSs have been shown to have longer battery life, since they’re designed to power a smaller number of devices; obviously, battery life will depend on power consumption. This model features a 10,400 mAh lithium battery.
Among this model’s specifications, a POE port selectable between 15V and 24V stands out—ideal for powering wireless antennas, access points, or IP phones that require power via the network cable. The box includes the unit itself, the power cord, and a standard DC cable (male-to-male) with two connectors, meaning you can connect two devices. This is perfect for me, since, as I mentioned, I want to connect both the modem and the router.
In the coming days, I’ll be doing some work on one of the walls in my living room to install another outlet, which will be used solely to plug in the mini UPS—and then the modem and router into it—all mounted on the wall. In fact, I’m already thinking about how to hide some of the cables that will be exposed, but one step at a time.
As for the price, it was $64; the store where I bought it has slightly high prices, but I paid in bolivars using the TDC card they issued in partnership with a bank, so the purchase is financed over 12 months.
In short, this mini UPS will be very useful in emergencies, since—as long as the modem and router have power—I’ll be able to enjoy my fiber-optic service.
