Inflation is a common phenomenon in the world, at least since a few decades ago, when the gold standard was abandoned worldwide. However, hyperinflation is another level, which not many in the world get to experience. I imagine that for a person from a country with a stable economy, it must be hard to believe some of the things you experience in hyperinflation.
Everything about money changes, including our perception of it. A person from another country may have heard stories of the world wars, where a single loaf of bread was bought with a basket of money, but from there to living through it is a different story. Today we are fortunate to have digital money, which makes it even more difficult to understand hyperinflation, not only for those who live it but also for those who do not.
When hyperinflation started in Venezuela, if I am not mistaken it was in 2017, I had already in itself lived a very big distortion since the beginning of strong inflation, more or less in 2013. Before 2013, I was still starting my university studies, I remember it was normal for me to go almost every day to the university cafeteria to buy lunch. It was normal for me, until then, to make large purchases with cash.
But this began to change gradually, and then quickly. At first I didn't think much of it, since it didn't seriously impact my quality of life. But as time went by, I began to realize that money was no longer enough, that I had to spend more sparingly. Cash was starting to become a nuisance, since to buy the same object, it was becoming more and more numerous. Coins became obsolete in a short time, nobody accepted them anymore.
Hyperinflation radically changes your daily life. It deteriorates your quality of life to a great extent. In the last semesters of my career I never got to buy lunch, I always brought my own food. All the money you earn is pulverized from one day to the next, because prices increase almost daily. Cash is no longer used, except for public transportation, so if you don't have a car, you have to go to the bank to get cash, which they usually don't have it or give you a small amount daily.
Some questions given in the challenge by @rutablockchain:
What is the hardest part of living in hyperinflation?
I think the hardest part is getting out of it, either by emigrating from the country or finding a way to earn an income in foreign currencies or cryptocurrencies. This requires initiative, preparation, certain skills that allow you to find an income to cope with hyperinflation. But also all the deterioration of your quality of life that hyperinflation brings.
What have you learned from this situation?
I am almost certain that if I had not lived through the hyperinflation, I would be just another employee somewhere, totally dependent on his salary and not having any kind of entrepreneurship in mind. This difficult situation has brought out the best in me, it has led me to learn many things, research and read more, I feel I have the skills to develop a project or something. I probably wouldn't have been interested in cryptocurrencies or met Hive if it wasn't for hyperinflation.
What was the trigger for hyperinflation in your country?
Well, according to what I understand, all this has its origin far back in time, from more than half a century ago (or even further back), and it came to materialize in its maximum expression a few years ago with hyperinflation.
With the high oil revenues, instead of developing the country, a strong state monopoly policy was implemented, where the State and its friends had total protection, and basically decided that it was easier to import than to stimulate the growth of national companies. When oil prices were unfavorable, everything fell apart and more money was printed to cover the deficiencies. All this did not change much in the last 70 years, it just got worse in the last 2 decades.
What advice would you give to a foreigner who is going to start experiencing hyperinflation in his country?
Acquire as much hard currency as possible and also cryptocurrencies, although first informing yourself about them. Evaluate the possibility of emigrating or staying, but knowing that you will have to find a way to avoid or cope with hyperinflation.
How HIVE and Leofinance help people living in hyperinflation?
Hive and LeoFinance make it possible to receive considerable rewards for someone living in hyperinflation. At least $30 a month already represents a significant amount of money for any Venezuelan, and being able to acquire it through content creation is excellent. One of the greatest fortunes of living in this era are cryptocurrencies.
