The ceiling has been treated regularly but the mold stains are ugly and we wanted to pain this ceiling.
The first step is to treat the ceiling again with a product that kills the mold. It's a product that is based on Hydrogen Peroxide. The great thing is that the residual fume is simply oxygen and it can be used within the house.
After I used the mold product, I had to wait for half a day so that it could get rid of the mold. I then needed to wash it down with a sponge. This is actually quite tricky when you don't want to get all on your face...
The next step was to tape the surface that I wanted to paint. I used a broad tape all along the top part of the walls where they meet the ceiling.
In the next step, I protected the walls, the floor and the infrastructure with a plastic film. This was quite tricky to put. I struggled with that because I needed to stick it, hold it and cut it. Not easy with only two hands...
Once I covered everything with plastic, I prepared the chair that I would step on to do the painting. The ceiling can't be reached from the floor. So I had to do some acrobatics...
Finally it was time to paint. I used a brush and a roll that were made for uneven surfaces. The pain that I bought was special for bathrooms that have mold issues.
I put on latex gloves and old cloths and started the painting. It was tough because I was standing on the chair. With one hand holding the paint and with the other the brush or the roll. Then I had to make sure that all the paint didn't land on me...
When they built our flat, they made some mistakes and one of our two bathrooms gets too much humidity. The result is that we are constantly fighting the mold in it. I use a special product to kind of kill the mold but with each treatment, there are more stains. They are not dangerous but they are ugly...
Towards a real solution
So each time we have guests we need to apologize for the ugly ceiling and we needed a real solution. I was looking for some offers from painters. I sent some e-mails and hardly got any answers. It seems they don't need work here around. I tried to look at some youtube videos to figure out whether I would be able to the job myself. I have absolutely no experience in this field and I'm not really the manual guy.
After some interesting inputs from youtube, I decided that I would be able to at least try it. Here I share with you how I proceeded.
80% satisfied with my work
I managed to paint the whole ceiling without putting paint where it shouldn't go (that's what I was afraid of). Also the paint looks quite well. The stains are covered but I could detect some places where the ceiling isn't 100% white. I saw it too late unfortunately. Well it was an amateur at work but I'm happy it's done. My wife hasn't seen the result and she doesn't know that I did it. She is still on holidays with the kids and it will be my surprise for them.
Have you ever painted stuff in your hourse?
