Jump Blue: a novelty in Cuba

93302018_3642137275857359_4560335153213210624_n.jpg

On June 20, 2005, conditions were created in the vicinity of the Copacabana Hotel in Havana for our seabed to witness a sporting novelty.

Apneists from Venezuela and Cuba shared days of sporting empathy during the First Alba Sports Games, in different competitive modalities in the pool and then in the sea.

The Jump Blue is one of the freediving disciplines that emerged thanks to the World Confederation of Underwater Activities (CMAS).

In it, the competitor must move up to the maximum horizontal distance he can reach, following a 15 m2 rope quadrilateral. This is fixed, between 10 and 15 meters deep, without touching the bottom of the sea.

On the surface, 4 marker balls guide the shape of a square. From their tips, ropes descend to the bottom, fixed by ballast, to prevent the structure from moving due to the action of the current or the waves.

Athletes propel themselves using fins, where the use of the monofin is more frequent, due to its greater power. They exhibit an attractive body contouring, resembling the movement of a cetacean's tail.
When they can no longer sustain their apnea time, they mark their maximum distance on the line with a clothes-peg before ascending to the surface.
The divers, designated as judges, are in charge of recording, with a measuring tape the exact distances covered.

Once on the surface, the freediver must wait 10 seconds before touching the judge on the head. These cannot receive any kind of help in the first 30 seconds to avoid being disqualified. In this way, we are sure that the athlete finished his sport discipline in optimal conditions.

At the back of the hotel we find an international diving center, the pool area, and the area with that slope, for the entry and exit of divers and light boats to the sea.

The Jump Blue takes place at a depth where the absolute pressure to which the diver is subjected doubles at 10 meters. The exercise, which involves the effort of kicking with a monofin, is a factor that leads to oxygen consumption, and the diver may suffer hypoxemia or syncope if he does not ascend in due time.

Therefore, the medical care plan had to be well delineated. I placed part of my medical team and the ambulance at the closest point to the competition site.

In that zodiac type rubber boat, along with the company of another doctor and divers, I set up a transfer table, a normobaric oxygenation equipment and a first aid kit.
Deborah, enlisted as always, would be part of the surface belay.

The event ended without any diving accidents and with a good performance by the athletes.

It was time for the awards ceremony. In the women's division, two Cubans won the gold and silver medals. On the men's side, the gold and bronze went equally to two freedivers from Cuba, and the silver to the Venezuelan brother.

A day full of happiness and sporting complicity, ended with a moment of festivity, with that marine smell kissing the environment, and where we tasted a delicious lunch among people who love and follow the same passion.

Thanks to those who read me until the end.
