he VELTINS-Arena, formerly called Arena auf Schalke, is a football stadium located in the city of Gelsenkirchen, in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia in northwestern Germany. In it plays their home games FC Schalke 04 of the German First Division of the German Bundesliga. It hosted the 2006 World Cup and is listed by UEFA as an elite stadium.

It is one of the most innovative new stadiums, due to its retractable roof and its huge mobile marker, among other features. The movable field allows to eliminate the problem of maintaining green areas in enclosures and also allows the stadium to host non-sporting events, such as concerts, without damage to the soccer field.

The concept of this type of court has already been successful in the Gelredome of Arnhem (Netherlands), built in 1998. Another example is that of the Sapporo Dome, used in the 2002 Soccer World Cup.

history:
The stadium was inaugurated on August 13, 2001 with the name of AufSchalke Arena, replacing the former Parkstadion. On July 1, 2005, the stadium changed its name to Veltins-Arena due to a name rights contract with the German brewery "Veltins".

During the development of the 2006 FIFA World Cup it was renamed the Gelsenkirchen FIFA World Cup Stadium (German: FIFA WM-Stadion Gelsenkirchen), as FIFA does not allow any type of advertising in the name of the stadiums .

It hosted the UEFA Champions League final in 2004, and some matches of the 2006 World Cup, including one quarter-final and has served as a momentary venue for the Rhein Fire of the NFL Europe while the Rheinstadion of Düsseldorf was under renovation.

The inaugural match of the 2010 Men's Ice Hockey World Championship between Germany and the United States was held there before 77,803 spectators, the third largest call in the history of ice hockey. The hosts achieved the 2-1 victory in additional time.
