陕西汉中发现了分布有49处天坑的罕见世界级天坑群，分布在宁强、南郑、西乡、镇巴。中国地质科学院岩溶研究所张远海教授表示，这是我国首次在北方发现天坑群
据介绍，汉中天坑群包括常规天坑31个、大型天坑17个、超级天坑1个，直径50到100米的漏斗50余处，洞穴50余处，峰丛、洼地、石林、地缝、峡谷、湖泊、石芽等岩溶地貌景观60余处。汉中天坑均分布在北纬32到33度之间，这是我国热带、亚热带岩溶地貌区最北界首次发现的岩溶地质景观
在洞中发现了罕见的珍稀动物飞猫，是天坑溶洞群的特有动物，学名叫鼯鼠，又叫“六不像”，脸面似狐，双眼如猫，尖嘴类鼠，耳朵像兔，脚爪若鸭，尾同松鼠。
