This is a tricky subject and I must say you discussed it really well, although maybe that's because we have a similar upbringing and outlook. One thing for sure is that it is hard to keep up with it all and almost impossible not to insult someone these days, whether it's using the wrong pronoun or saying something that they are offended about on behalf of someone else who most likely is not offended at all. Too much time on social media and screens has brought us here I reckon and I do like your analogy "It feels like worrying about the curtains while the house is on fire"
