You raise very valid points here, especially around commenting, I hate the 'nice post' bullshit that you get.... they may as well write 'I didn't read yo post, but please click on my name and come read mine!'

Reciprocation is important too I find and when someone leaves an engaging comment on a post of mine, I will usually visit their page and read a post that jumps out as interesting and comment and upvote it.
