I arrived early at the pool terrace of the Saratoga Hotel on a beautiful April evening in 2019. I had had the opportunity to help a certain person who happened to be a clerk at this hotel, and in payment I asked him to let me wait for sunset to photograph the view from that privileged position. The National Capitol was receiving the final touches to celebrate the 500th anniversary of our city, and I took advantage of the incomparable opportunity. At that time I had a Nikon D7200 with a Sigma 17-50 f2.8 and I also took a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 for some shots closer to the capitol, and also to capture the illuminated facade of the Grang Theater Alicia Alonso that was a little farther away. I sat there for several hours, shooting at intervals with my ND filters until nightfall. I left there super satisfied with the experience.
On a sad and fateful May 6, 2022, during the discharge of gas from a tanker truck into the hotel, a horrible explosion occurred, killing 47 people and injuring more than 50. The hotel is currently under reconstruction, the terrace from which I took these photos has the same view, but it brings with it a taste that is too bitter for us Cubans.
Llegué temprano a la terraza con piscina del hotel Saratoga en una hermosa tarde de abril de 2019. Había tenido la oportunidad de ayudar a cierta persona que resultó ser administrativo de este hotel, y en pago le pedí que me dejara esperar el atardecer para fotografiar la vista desde esa privilegiada posición. El Capitolio Nacional estaba recibiendo los últimos retoques para celebrar el aniversario 500 de nuestra ciudad, y aproveché la incomparable oportunidad. En aquél entonces tenía una Nikon D7200 con un sigma 17-50 f2.8 y llevé además un Tamron 70-200 f2.8 para algunas tomas más cercanas al capitolio, y también para capturar la fachada iluminada del Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso que me quedaba un poco más lejos. Estuve varias horas ahí sentado, disparando a intervalos con mis filtros ND hasta que llegó la noche. Salí de ahí super satisfecho con la experiencia.
Un triste y fatídico 6 de mayo de 2022, durante la descarga de gas de un camión cisterna hacia el interior del hotel, ocurrió una horrible explosión que acabó con la vida de 47 personas e hirió a más de 50. Actualmente el hotel se encuentra en reconstrucción, la terraza desde la cual hice estas fotos tiene la misma vista, pero trae consigo un sabor demasiado amargo para nosotros los cubanos.
