Hello Hive community,
My name is Abd, and I am a 24-year-old from Syria. I was born on January 1, 2002. Like many young people here, my childhood was put on hold when the conflict started in 2011. I am sharing my story today not to look for pity, but just to introduce myself honestly and connect with people around the world who value education and shared human experiences.
### Growing Up Around Chaos (2012 - 2018)
In 2012, when I was only 10, heavy shelling forced my family to leave everything behind and flee to Jordan as refugees. We came back a year later, but life didn't get any easier. We lived through years of airstrikes, and then ISIS took over our region in 2014. By 2016, we were living under a tight siege where finding basic food or electricity was a daily struggle. Even after ISIS left in 2018, a large part of my town was destroyed, and security militias took over, making life unpredictable with constant chaos, kidnappings, and a rising drug crisis.
### Trying to Study
Despite everything happening around me, I tried my best to keep my focus on my future. In 2022, I managed to study amidst all this environment, passed my high school exams with a 68% score (Scientific branch), and enrolled at the Second Faculty of Law at Damascus University.
I chose law because I wanted to understand how rules and justice could help fix a broken society. But being a student wasn't safe under the old regime. I was stopped, harassed, and extorted for money multiple times by security personnel just for trying to attend my classes. Eventually, the pressure became too much to handle, and I had to stop going to the university to keep myself safe.
Thankfully, after the recent major changes in Syria, life is finally opening up again. I have officially re-registered at the Second Faculty of Law at Damascus University to finish my degree. It feels incredible to finally look at tomorrow with some real hope.
### Why I Joined Hive
I joined Hive because I want to overcome the isolation we have lived through for years. I want to use this blog to write casually about things that interest me, like legal and social topics, human psychology under pressure, and the philosophy of everyday freedom.
Over the past years, I have personally witnessed hundreds of real-life stories around me—success, failure, deep pain, moments of joy, fear, betrayal, and true loyalty. These experiences shaped how I see the world, and everything I share here will come straight from my own thoughts and memories.
I am really excited to be part of this community, read your blogs, and share a bit of my perspective as a young guy who is finally getting a second chance at life.
