What is Bullying?
Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems.
Types of bullying
Bullying is usually described by the types of behaviours involved, so we talk about verbal, social and physical bullying.
Bullying is sometimes also labelled by where it occurs or by what type of harm is done. These words can be used alone or in combination. It can be confusing!
The most common ways that bullying is described are:
Type of behaviour – verbal, social and physical
Setting – in person and online
Means – direct and indirect
Visibility – overt and covert
Harm – physical and psychological
Context – home, work and school
From my own experience
When I was a child I think I was very innocent. Particularly I was born with a problem in my eye called strabismus which made my eyes not aligned perfectly. Well, like every 5-year-old boy, I normally went to school and was exposed to anything. I remember that because of this problem many children told me cross-eyed, biro, four eyes, Harry Potter among others. This certainly made me feel bad, it made me feel like the ugliest kid in school and I felt that for that reason I would have fewer opportunities than other children with their normal eyes.
I grew up of course with many fears. And it was already at the age of 13 when I managed to overcome all those fears and frustrations that are created over time. Thanks to my will power I was able to understand that no matter how we are, or what disability we may have, the true value of a person is carried inside.
For that moment my 5 years never told anything to my parents, so the couple should be aware of the feelings of their children, to ask them because they feel sad, because their face has decayed and thus attack the root problem.
We must raise awareness among the population to be more empathetic, put ourselves in the shoes of others, use our networks to build and support the talents; not to destroy them and criticize them in the worst way.
Right now I feel confident, and I feel that helping others makes me grow as a person. that's why today I say:
PLEASE STOP BULLYING
