That's what I told my best friend who was a fish enthusiast. He had these huge tanks with Silver and Gold Arwanas swimming gracefully with their permanent frowns for mouths. "They aren't pets if you can't pet them" I told him. I'm pretty sure he felt insulted and apparently, so did the Oscar fish to my left as it splashed water on me from the whiplash while it was feeding. I see them the way I see plants; ornaments, decoration, I said, nothing more than an accessory to bring a dull wall to life. Couple of my friends also had fishes as "pets" and they had this clique where they would talk about how rare and cool their fishes were, like a couple of nerds arguing over D&D.
One day my best friend handed me a bag with 3 Mollies, 2 males and a female. You see, he had a pond filled with these, Guppies and some turtles so it was no biggie. "What am I gonna do with these?" he just smirked back. I took them home, I didn't have an aquarium so I put them in a tall glass jar and decorated it with the pebbles and plants he gave along. I placed the jar by the window beside my bed, where the light from my lamp would reach. So I layed there, looking at these dumb-looking water creatures, with the bottom of their mouths so big that the opening is almost on top of their heads, swim up and down, wiggle and gulp water. It became a routine, I would watch them do their fish business until I would fall asleep at night or whenever I took a nap. It's been more than a year since then, and I definitely ate what I said.
Here have a looksie at fishies
Ps.
My other friends' fishes died one by one so they had to keep buying new ones. Mine multiplied and have been with me for more than a year!
