Genus Hippophae is mostly known as sea buckthorns, also sandthorn, sallowthorn, or seaberry. The Latin name of the genus, Hippophae, is derived from hippo (horse), and phaos (shining). In ancient times, the plant was used as a horse bait to support weight gain and appearance of the horse coat.
