Jeff begged at the corner where the main street led into the square. In reality he didn't beg for money or stage a state of indigent need that would move to pity. He would write on a piece of cardboard an ironic phrase that would lead to reflection, the theme revolved around what was necessary and what was superfluous, but varying the approach and asking for a contribution only if his reasoning had found a match. This original method led people to recognize a kind of esteem and dignity in him, and sometimes someone would stop to discuss and debate. It could be said that he had invented a new profession, that of street philosopher.

Jeff mendicava all'angolo in cui la via principale sfociava nelle piazza. In realtà non mendicava chiedendo soldi o inscenando uno stato di necessità indigente che muovesse alla pietà. Scriveva su un pezzo di cartone una frase ironica ma che inducesse ad una riflessione, il tema ruotava intorno a ciò che era necessario e ciò che era superfluo, ma variando l'approccio e chiedendo un contributo solo nel caso in cui il suo ragionamento avesse trovato un riscontro. Questo metodo originale portò la gente a riconoscergli una sorta di stima e dignità, e talvolta qualcuno si fermava a discutere e ad confrontarsi. Si poteva asserire che si fosse inventato una nuova professione, quella di filosofo di strada.
