FLIPPER

How can the whale do that ?
The secret resides in the bumps of the whale's flipper.
What a marvelous creature!!! Thanks to the Lord !!

Most whales and other cetaceans have their flippers with smooth leading edges. This is the secret of the humpback, it possesses a unique large bumps, or tubercles, on the leading edge of its flippers.
This is where the ingenuity kicks in. As the humpback swims, water flows over the bumps and breaks up intelligently into a multitude of vortices.
The bumps serves as a conduit to flow and create a turbulence.
The whale is heavy as we all know but the tubercle effect provides the whale with more lift. It allows the humpback whale to tilt its flippers at high angle without losing speed.
This ingenuity continues to give the whale support to reduce drag. This is a good benefit for the long flippers, each being about one third of his body.
