Maryland Legalizes Recreational Cannabis in July

Maryland is setting up for legal recreational cannabis within its borders this Summer. As of July 1, 2023, adults 21 and older may use and possess regulated amounts of cannabis for personal recreational usage.

Recreational cannabis legalization and a number of other provisions were passed during a vote under “Question 4”. In addition to the establishment of personal usage limits for personal consumption, the bill that became law also sets aside money for educational and health programs, expunges cannabis criminal records and decriminalizes cannabis possession below 2.5 ounces. This is very standard for other states which have legalized cannabis for recreational usage.

Medical cannabis is currently legal in Maryland, and the liberal members of the state Senate and House will likely establish the framework for recreational cannabis sales and usage for adults using the examples and lessons learned from other states.

Maryland is joining a growing number of states that are legalizing recreational cannabis. One day, cannabis may be decriminalized and legalized for recreational consumption in the United States at a federal level, and Maryland’s step forward is huge. Maryland is a liberal state, and this was not unexpected
