You will surely recognize the name of this artist known by his full name as Vasilli Kandinsky, in some article related to art and that this man is known as the father of abstractionism. Kandinsky was a Russian painter who made serious studies on Abstract art and also left for the world a series of studies on art and aesthetics.

However, we have to understand that Kandinsky before being an artist, was a lawyer. Yes, Kandinsky studied law and economics, working only in this field before anything else. His career as an artist was late, but that did not prevent him from formalizing his studies, so where did his interest in art come from?

To understand this, it is necessary to know that Kandinsky was a child who grew up in a well-to-do family. The son of divorced parents, he lived his childhood in different places and in one of those houses, he was under the tutelage of one of his aunts. This woman was an important figure in Kandinsky's decision for art, as she taught him about music and formalized his studies in music academies, managing to learn to play the cello and piano. Let's say that this is one of the first stages where Kandinsky discovers his gifts for art. But this stage as a musician did not last long.

As I mentioned above, Kandinsky decided to go into law and work as a teacher, but just when he had an opportunity to work at one of the most important universities in Russia, in Moscow, he attended an exhibition on impressionist painters that would forever change his life.

It turns out that Kandinsky decided to attend this exhibition for recreational purposes, where there were works by French Impressionist painters of the stature of Claude Monet. It was precisely the latter who, with his work entitled "The Haystacks", captivated Kandinsky's interest. In this painting there were two piles of straw (two haystacks) and what Kandinsky could not understand was how they did not look like two piles of straw and rather looked like anything else. Kandinsky understood at that moment, that the objects (figures) within a painting should be the protagonists in that painting, because they were the ones that gave form and color achieved that visual arrangement to denote the existence of them. So from that moment on he decided to study Fine Arts in Germany, abandoning his career as a lawyer and as a teacher.

Kandinsky had difficulty getting into the academy, being rejected the first time he tried to enter. Until he tried a second time and finally got in. There he would learn the difficulties of painting under the tutelage of the painter Franz Von Stuck, who pointed out that Kandinsky worked painting in a very childish way, too colorful and disorderly. It is said that it was so demanding for Kandinsky, to learn to work with less bright colors, that for a year this teacher required him to paint under the grayscales.

Kandisky in his early days as a painter, worked a lot on landscape painting and his works were full of many bright colors. Kandisky himself stated that he did not draw portraits because he considered that he was bad at it. Therefore he limited himself to landscapes. Also because of his Russian influence, it could be said that Kandinsky under the idea of Russian fairy tales that were full of fantasy, made works of great color, very cheerful and beautiful.

Once the painter decided to work with other artists, in different painters' guilds, his development became noticeable. He decided to experiment with expressionism, surrealism and a number of other artistic currents. But his style was defined when he went to work as a teacher at the Bauhaus in Germany.

In this school he met great painters. His right hand was Paul Klee, and together with him he taught about form theory and a subject that we could title as technical drawing. It was an enriching experience and where Kandinsky projected himself under a new style: abstract art. Specifically lyrical abstract. Afterwards, the Bauhaus closed and Kandinsky took up residence in France where he would spend the rest of his life.

By this time Kandinsky had published two books where he explained how painting functioned as a form of spiritual expression for the human being and another book, which is undoubtedly one of the most important for the arts, entitled: Line and point on the plane. This will be touched on later but, first we will determine what it is that Kandinsky did.

Kandinsky called Abstract art that composition, where the elements function harmoniously on the plane and where the figure is brought to its most basic states of representation. In other words, Kandinsky wanted to achieve to represent scenarios with the sole use of basic elements, geometric shapes and color, without reaching realism. For example, to draw a ballerina, who will be our figure, we would usually think of making her anatomically perfect, with a detailed face and body. For Kandinsky this was not necessary, because it was enough with some straight lines and curves, to imply that this is the figure of a dancer. Think, for example, of that man made of sticks that we used to make when we were children, because that's more or less the point.

Don't believe what many have said out there, that Abstract art can be anything filled with lots of randomly made blobs of paint. Not at all. Abstract art is rather one of the most complex styles and where order, harmony and accuracy become the rule. A painting by Kandinsky for example, will be thought to be randomly done, any painted madness, but he actually positions the elements with precision.

This is where I'm getting at. Abstract art is anything but messy. Of course we also have to understand that there are different types of Abstract art and because of that there is a very big confusion and it leads to a decline of art.

It was Vasilli Kandisky who gave a name to the lyrical Abstract art style. That would be a type of Abstract art So what is abstract art?

In general terms Abstract art has a much broader concept as it is an artistic movement that has its own language, independent and concrete that is expressed through the use of shapes, colors and perspectives without the intention of copying reality. It is not a figurative art. It rejects the idea of copying (mimesis) of reality (real space, figures, objects, living beings) and therefore creates its own reality different from the natural one. It creates its own world. I wish to make this very clear.

There are different types of abstract art, which I think are necessary to know and I leave here some of them:

1. Lyrical Abstract: It is Kandinsky's own style. It possesses order, balance and harmony. It is a style full of coherence, rhythm, color and vibration. Nothing done at random.

2. Abstract Geometric: This style is based on the use of geometric shapes. It is derived from cubism because of the use of the same elements.

3. Intuitional Abstract: This style emphasizes the sensible world rather than the real world. It makes the viewer the one who enters the painting and works intuition through the sensible world. There is no logic.

4. Abstract Minimalist: This style seeks a return to simplicity. Through few elements it tells a story. It is never overloaded with too many elements.

5. Contemporary Abstract: It is a style that reformulates the concept of abstract art. Here form, line and color are not placed with predetermination.

Knowing this, then we must ask ourselves the following.... If Abstract art seeks a language of its own, but full of coherence why is it believed that any randomly made painting is Abstract art? This is because with the arrival of modernity, concepts and new artists have sought to change the precepts of the past. A clear example is the artist Jackson Pollock with his contemporary Abstract art who with his dripping technique has twisted the concept of Abstract art from coherent, to anything. How did we go from an abstract art full of formal, chromatic and structural aspects to a modern Abstract art that lacks all of the above? For me, it is definitely a decline in art. The art of doing nothing.

Where is all the effort of an artist to know and study the resources of art, its history, its theories and so on, so it is not worth it? Of course it is, it is still worth it because the quality behind each work of an artist who has made an effort to handle the subject will always be noticed. I consider that this is more important than the superficiality of a painting that has been made out of nothing. Remembering that to do is necessary to know, and if you don't know, how can you do anything? That happens with a lot of our modern art.

Seguro reconocerás el nombre de este artista conocido por su nombre completo como Vasilli Kandinsky, en algún artículo relacionado al arte y que a este hombre se le conoce como el padre del abstraccionismo. Kandinsky fue un pintor ruso que realizó serios estudios sobre el arte Abstracto y también dejó para el mundo una serie de estudios sobre el arte y la estética.

Sin embargo, tenemos que entender que Kandinsky antes de ser un artista, fue un abogado. Sí, Kandinsky estudio derecho y economía, trabajando solo en este ámbito antes que en cualquier otra cosa. Su carrera como artista fue tardía, pero eso no impidió que logrará formalizar sus estudios, entonces ¿De dónde surgió su interés en el arte?

Para entender esto, es necesario saber que Kandinsky fue un niño que creció en una familia acomodada. Hijo de padres divorciados, vivió su infancia en diferentes lugares y en una de esas casas, estuvo bajo la tutela de una de sus tías. Esta mujer fue una figura importante en la decisión de Kandinsky para con el arte, pues ella le enseñó sobre música y formalizó estudios en academias de música, consiguiendo aprender a tocar el violonchelo y el piano. Digamos que esta es una de las primeras etapas donde Kandinsky descubre sus dotes para el arte. Pero esta etapa de músico no duró mucho.

Como mencioné arriba, Kandinsky decidió dedicarse al derecho y a trabajar como docente, pero justo cuando tuvo una oportunidad de trabajar en una de más universidades más importantes de Rusia, en Moscú, asistió a una exposición sobre pintores impresionistas que cambiaría para siempre su vida.

Resulta que Kandinsky decidió asistir a esta exposición con fines recreativos, donde se encontraban obras de pintores impresionistas franceses de la talla de Claude Monet. Fue justamente este último quien con su obra titulada "Los Almiares", cautivó el interés de Kandinsky. En dicho cuadro se encontraban dos montones de paja (dos almiares) y lo que Kandinsky no lograba entender era como no lucían como dos montones de paja y más bien lucían como cualquier otra cosa. Kandinsky comprendió en ese momento, que los objetos (figuras) dentro de una pintura debían ser los protagonistas en dicha pintura, porque era los que otorgaban forma y el color lograba ese acomodo visual para denotar la existencia de los mismos. Entonces a partir de ese momento decidió estudiar Artes Plásticas en Alemania, abandonando su carrera como abogado y como profesor.

Kandinsky tuvo dificultades para entrar a la academia, siendo rechazado la primera vez que intento entrar. Hasta que lo intento por segunda vez y finalmente entró. Allí conocería las dificultades de la pintura bajo la tutela del pintor Franz Von Stuck, quien señalaba que Kandinsky trabajaba la pintura de una manera muy infantil, demasiado colorida y desordenada. Se dice que era tanta la exigencia para Kandinsky, para que aprendiera a trabajar con menos colores brillantes, que por un año este profesor le exigió pintar bajo las escalas de grises.

Kandisky en sus inicios como pintor, trabajo muchísimo el paisajismo y sus obras estaban llenas de muchos colores brillantes. El propio Kandisky afirmó que no dibujaba retratos porque consideraba que era malo para eso. Por ello se limitó al paisaje. También por su influencia rusa, podría decirse que Kandinsky bajo la idea de cuentos rusos que estaban llenos de fantasía, realizaba obras de gran color, muy alegres y bonitas.

Una vez que el pintor decidió trabajar con otros artistas, en diferentes gremios de pintores, su desarrollo se hizo notar. Decidió experimentar con el expresionismo, el surrealismo y otra serie de corrientes artísticas. Pero su estilo se definió cuando entró a trabajar como profesor en la Bauhaus, en Alemania.

En esta escuela conoció a grandes pintores. Su mano derecha fue Paul Klee, y junto con el enseñó sobre teoría de la forma y una materia que podríamos titular como dibujo técnico. Fue una experiencia enriquecedora y donde Kandinsky se proyectó bajo un estilo nuevo: el arte Abstracto. Específicamente abstracto lírico. Luego, la Bauhaus cerró y Kandinsky se residió en Francia donde pasaría el resto de su vida.

Para este momento Kandinsky había publicado dos libros donde explicaba cómo la pintura funcionaba como una forma de expresión espiritual para el ser humano y otro libro, que es sin duda uno de los más importantes para las artes, titulado: Línea y punto sobre el plano. Ya se tocará este tema más adelante pero, primero determinaremos ¿Qué es lo que hizo Kandinsky?

Kandinsky llamaba arte Abstracto a aquella composición, donde los elementos funcionan de forma armoniosa en el plano y donde se lleva a la figura a sus estados más básicos de representación. En otras palabras, Kandinsky quería lograr representar escenarios con el solo uso de elementos básicos, formas geométricas y color, sin llegar al realismo. Por ejemplo, para dibujar a una bailarina, que será nuestra figura, usualmente pensaríamos en hacerla anatómicamente perfecta, con un rostro y cuerpo detallado. Para Kandinsky esto no era necesario, pues bastaba con algunas líneas rectas y curvas, para dar a entender que esa es la figura de una bailarina. Piensa por ejemplo, en ese hombre hecho de palitos que acostumbramos a hacer cuando éramos niños, pues de allí más o menos va la cosa.

No crean en lo que han dicho muchos por allí, que el arte Abstracto puede ser cualquier cosa llena de muchas manchas de pinturas hechas al azar. Para nada. El arte Abstracto es más bien uno de los estilos más complejos y donde el orden, la armonía y la exactitud se hacen regla. Un cuadro de Kandinsky por ejemplo, se pensará que está hecho al azar, cualquier locura pintada, pero él realmente posiciona los elementos con precisión.

Aquí es donde quiero llegar. El arte Abstracto es todo menos desorden. Claro también tenemos que entender que existen distintos tipos de arte Abstracto y por ello existe una confusión muy grande y conlleva a un declive del arte.

Fue Vasilli Kandisky quien le otorgó un nombre al estilo de arte Abstracto lírico. Eso sería un tipo de arte Abstracto ¿Entonces qué es arte abstracto?

En términos generales el arte Abstracto posee un concepto mucho más amplio pues es un movimiento artístico que posee su propio lenguaje, independiente y concreto que se expresa a través del uso de las formas, colores y perspectivas sin intención de copiar la realidad. No es un arte figurativo. Rechaza la idea de la copia (mimesis) de la realidad (espacio real, figuras, objetos, seres vivos) y por ello crea su propia realidad distinta a la natural. Crea su propio mundo. Deseo que esto quede muy claro.

Existen diferentes tipos de arte Abstracto, que considero son necesarios conocer y dejo acá algunos de ellos:

1. Abstracto lírico: Es el estilo propio de Kandinsky. Posee orden, equilibrio y armonía. Es un estilo lleno de coherencia, ritmo, color y vibración. Nada hecho al azar.

2. Abstracto Geométrica: Este estilo se basa en la utilización de formas geométricas. Se deriva del cubismo por la utilización de los mismos elementos.

3. Abstracto Intuicional: Este estilo hace énfasis en el mundo sensible y no el mundo real. Hace que el espectador sea quien se adentre a la pintura y trabaje la intuición a través del mundo sensible. No existe la lógica.

4. Abstracto Minimalista: Este estilo busca un retorno a lo simple. A través de pocos elementos cuenta una historia. Nunca esta recargado de demasiado elementos.

5. Abstracto Contemporáneo: Es un estilo que reformula el concepto de arte abstracto. Aquí la forma, línea y color no son ubicados con predeterminación.

Conociendo esto, entonces debemos plantearnos lo siguiente... Si el arte Abstracto busca un lenguaje propio, pero lleno de coherencia ¿Por qué se cree que cualquier cuadro hecho al azar es arte Abstracto? Esto se debe a que con la llegada de la modernidad, los conceptos y los nuevos artistas han buscado cambiar preceptos del pasado. Un ejemplo claro es el del artista Jackson Pollock con su arte Abstracto contemporáneo quien con su técnica del dripping ha tergiversado el concepto de arte Abstracto de coherente, a cualquier cosa ¿Cómo pasamos de un arte abstracto lleno de aspectos formales, cromáticos y estructurales a un arte Abstracto moderno que carece de todo lo mencionado? Para mi, definitivamente es un declive en el arte. El arte de no hacer nada.

¿Dónde queda todo el esfuerzo de un artista por conocer y estudiar los recursos del arte, su historia, sus teorías y demás? ¿Entonces no vale la pena? Claro que si, sigue valiendo la pena porqué siempre se notará la calidad detrás de cada obra de un artista que se ha esforzado por manejar la materia. Considero que es más importante eso, a la superficialidad de un cuadro que se ha hecho de la nada. Recordando que para hacer es necesario conocer y si no se conoce ¿Cómo puedes hacer algo? Eso sucede con mucho de nuestro arte moderno.

Quiero recalcar que esto es una crítica personal y con lo cual no pretendo hacer afirmaciones radicales sobre lo que es o no es verdad. Aunque ciertamente hay cosas que simplemente caen por su propio peso. Escribí esta publicación con la intención de dar a conocer el origen del arte Abstracto, el desarrollo y como ha finalizado en nuestra época moderna. Sin duda un tema muy interesante y fundamental para todo aquel que le interese el arte o que quiera ser artista.
