In the early 80s of the last century, Mike Wilton (guitarist) and Scott Rockenfield (drummer) were part of Cross + Fire. This group was fond of performing cover versions of famous bands performing compositions in the genre of heavy metal. The band was later joined by bassist Eddie Jackson and guitarist Chris DeGarmo. After the appearance of new musicians, the collective changes its name to The Mob. The band decides to take part in one of the local rock festivals. For this they needed a vocalist. The guys offered cooperation to Jeff Tate. At this time, the performer was part of another group - Babylon. But after the disappearance of the group, the performer begins to collaborate with The Mob. True, he was forced to leave the team. The fact is that the artist did not want to work in the heavy metal genre.

In 1981 the group recorded a demo tape. This small collection includes 4 compositions. In particular: "Queen of the Reich", "The Lady Wore Black", "Blinded" and "Nightrider". It is important that at that time D. Tate worked with the team. Moreover, the artist did not leave his team Myth. The guys tried to record their tracks on professional equipment. They offered the recording to various studios. But in response they heard only refusals.

At this time, the team changes its manager. This specialist recommended that the guys change the name of the group. They decided to take part of the title of one of their compositions - Queensrÿche. It is important that the team was the first to put an umlaut sign over the “Y”. Later, they repeatedly joked that this symbol had been following them for more than a dozen years. The guys had to explain how to pronounce it.

It should be noted that the demo was in demand on the music market. Its popularity has led to Kerrang! An enthusiastic review has been published. The guys, inspired by their success, release a mini-album with the same name. This happened in 1983. The recording was organized on the personal label "206 Records". This was the first major success of the team. After the release of the mini-record, Tate agrees to work with the group. In the same year, they sign a cooperation agreement with EMI. The reissue of the successful record immediately takes place. The popularity continues to grow. The debut album rises to 81 places in the Billboard rankings.
