Berdychiv. Streets

Berdychiv is an old town with an interesting and rich history, which was founded in 1320. The name of the city comes, perhaps, from the name of the Horde prince Berdych (Berdy-bek), who built a castle in this area.

In 1483 the city was ravaged by the Crimean Tatars under the leadership of Khan Mengli Giray. But soon Berdychiv is being restored. After the conclusion of the Lublin Union and the creation of the Commonwealth, this city came under the rule of the Polish crown.

During its existence, Berdychiv was destroyed many times, a large number of wars and various battles passed through the city. Times of calm were replaced by turbulent events that brought a whirlwind of change and often destruction. Beginning with the Cossack uprisings and ending with the Second World War, all these events did not contribute to the preservation of the architectural record of old Berdychiv.

There are few pre-revolutionary houses left on the streets of the city. It should be remembered that since the end of the 17th century Berdychiv has been the most Jewish city in all of Ukraine. There were large fairs that can be compared with European and which are not inferior to them in popularity.
