Throwback to the sensational Seventies for Three Tune Tuesday

Hi there everyone, I hope that you're enjoying the music in your ears, your mind, where ever and however you're listening to it.

So glad that I saw @Slobberchops last #TTT post here @slobberchops/three-tune-tuesday-gravel-voice#@chocolatescorpi/re-slobberchops-sc1gqe with his 3 picks and that @ablaze invited me to join in the fun too.

It's been a pretty rough few months as my dad had a few falls over xmas which landed him in hospital then they eventually realised he had Mesothelioma https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/mesothelioma/symptoms-causes/syc-20375022 and a couple of month later he died- 28/02/2024 RIP dad, and so during that time, spending days in the hospital with him and then nights at home with my older brother, listening to the music on the radio kept me strong, so I'm happy to be here and to be able to share with you some of those classic songs that kept me alive too.

I’d like to introduce you to Australia’s one of Australia’s most iconic bands with three my favourite songs from them all completely unique, thought provoking and socially relevant to their time in history with great rocking tunes and lyrics too!

1970's Australia was a bit like a big country town and I was very lucky to grow up in a rural setting down the Far South Coast of NSW here [//]:# (!pinmapple -36.68365 lat 149.84659 long BEGA VALLEY d3scr).

We were lucky enough to be situated halfway between Sydney and Melbourne along the coast road on the Princess Hwy, so back then when bands played at pubs and other smaller venues than the big arenas that they do now, we were lucky enough to have the Tathra Pub, well know amongst all the big and small bands of the time, as a great venue to play at as people would come from far and wide to see bands and I think the most I ever paid for entry was $15- and that was a pretty big price at the time too!

Anyway, one band that I never got to see live unfortunately was the awesome Skyhooks, led by the effervescent Shirl Strachan and now it's too late, as unfortunately he died back in 2001 at the age of 49 and has been sorely missed since.

His legacy and that of SKyhooks will live on forever though, so I invite you to join me in 3 of many great songs that are still so relevant- if not more so today, as they were back then.

LIVING IN THE 70'S

Living in the 70's is the debut album by Melbourne band Skyhooks. Released in October 1974 on the Mushroom Records label, the album achieved relatively little success until early 1975. It spent 16 weeks at the top of the Australian album charts from late February 1975, and became the highest-selling album by an Australian act in Australia until that time, with sales of over 330,000.[2] In October 2010, it was listed at No. 9 in the book 100 Best Australian Albums.[3] The album's eponymous track was ranked number 72 as part of Triple M's "Ozzest 100", the 'most Australian' songs of all time ranking.[4]

HORROR MOVIE

Horror Movie" is a song by Australian band Skyhooks, released in December 1974 as the second and final single from the band's debut studio album, Living in the 70's. The song peaked at number one in Australia, staying there for two weeks in March 1975. The single was greatly helped along by the band's appearance on the then-new ABC pop music TV show Countdown.

At the Australian 1975 King of Pop Awards the song won Australian Record of the Year.[1]

Along with "Women in Uniform", "Horror Movie" is widely recognised as one of the Skyhooks' signature tracks. The song itself, written by bass guitarist Greg Macainsh, is about how the world has taken a turn for the worse with all of the chaos in society, to the point where watching the nightly TV news is like watching a horror movie.[2]

In January 2018, as part of Triple M's "Ozzest 100", the 'most Australian' songs of all time, "Horror Movie" was ranked number 47.[7]

Junkee declared it one of the best Australian songs ever, saying, "this song hasn’t earned its place on this list because it’s a searing takedown of modern industrial capitalism, or the news media’s involvement in it. It has earned its place on this list because that chorus is a dagger pressed with gold leaf; a snaking, vicious piece of art that mixes high camp theatre with Beach Boys-esque sonic chops."[2]

JUKEBOX IN SIBERIA

"Jukebox in Siberia" is a song by the Australian group, Skyhooks, released in October 1990 as the lead single from the group's compilation album, The Latest and Greatest (November). It was the group's first new recording in almost a decade, and featured the classic line-up of the band. The song was written by their bass guitarist, Greg Macainsh; his lyrics consider Russia under the rule of Gorbachev in the era of glasnost ("openness") and perestroika ("restructuring").[1]

So anyway, I hope that you loved these 3 songs as much as I still do after all these years and encourage you to checkout more of this legendary Australian band here
