Guns, seconded only by maybe abortion, are the most emotional subject for people in my experience. While other issues have a slightly greater chance of common ground, I have seen the most visceral reaction to opposite sides on guns. One side thinks the other is trying to disarm them so they die. The other thinks the other side wants to arm everyone so they die.
It takes a lot of work to compel people to shift sides.
