A Reel Comparison for 2022

In between producing gigs - and when I'm not working on my own material - I do a lot of editing for fun and money. In 2021, I did more editing on other people's work than at any other time in my life, ending on some work for Timeless Today and my friend's 2022 directing reel for unscripted television.

TONY'S 2022 REEL:

Tony has done a lot of high profile work and it was a lot of fun cutting to such a visually varied career. Tony's previous reel is quite different from the one I put together.

TONY'S 2020 REEL:

Structurally, Tony's 2020 reel is cut like a tiny reality show. Both his original reel and my new edit contain a brief montage at the top with a few notable sound-ups, but then the reel is broken up into pods, complete with stings and sound design. While good, it's a bit slow for my taste and doesn't lend itself to showing as much of Tony's work as possible. The music is scored and cut like a reality show as well, with dramatic music that is in line with many of the shows Tony has directed. Sign posts - like hosts or VO declaring "UTOPIA" or some other show title - are used to guide the audience through the edit.

A CHANGE IN DIRECTION:

My strategy was completely different from whoever cut his original reel. Instead of breaking it up into pods, cutting it like a show and using dramatic music as a bed, I chose a modern, powerful track by Magic Sword to drive the edit and largely abandon the pod or chapter like structure of the original.

This freed me up to compress as much new and old - but also great - material into the edit to better highlight Tony's visual creativity and range. Before, we were a bit constrained because the cuts had to make more sense in relation to each other, but now I could break up the visuals to fit the rhythm instead of having to wait for an arbitrary change to a new show to display the best footage.

The biggest note I received was that we had to get more famous people into the edit, which is completely understandable, and I worked with Tony to get what he wanted in there to show that he is not only capable of visual depth but also capable of working with the industry's top talent.

I think we largely succeeded while also making the new cut much more energetic, kinetic even, and it's fun to watch.
