Useless information #15 – Winning Nobel Prizes working as volunteers… yes it happened.

I’m not sure volunteer is the right word...
You’ll get it right away.
Two scientists worked hard and were not getting paid. Put like that it doesn’t look so different from what still happens today in many places but by then they were had no salary because they… were women!

  • Marie Curie (herself) worked for a long time as a “volunteer” until finally she got her first position in the University working as… lab assistant… in… her husband’s laboratory… one year after she won her first Nobel Prize.

  • Maria Goeppert Mayer also won a Physics Nobel Prize but until she received her first university salary she worked as a volunteerfor 30 years.
