^^^^^^^^^^ Sublime Sunday / Beautiful Sunday ^^^^^^^^^^

In Singapore, most of us (about 80%), live in public housing which is managed by the state Housing and Development Board. These flats are located in housing estates.

Each housing estate is ‘self-sufficient’, in that there are malls, convenience shops, community centers, schools, polyclinics, Chinese medical halls, supermarket, food centers, coffee shops, sports and recreational facilities, parks and gardens, places of worship like mosque and temples… what else have I missed out… In short, all our daily basic necessities can be found here in the house, and there is no need to go into town – unless you are looking for high-end designer goods and products, or you have specific business to attend to.

Public transport – buses, Light Rail Transport (LRT) and Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) link the residents to other estates, and other parts of the city-state. Residents are less that ten minutes away from the bus-stop or train stations. The public transport system here is very good, and they connect well all over the island.

The following are all within walking distances from me.

This is a community center. It is right across the road from me.

A polyclinic two blocks away.

A mosque, beside the polyclinic. Behind the mosque are Executive Condominiums, or ECs. Executive Condominiums are high-end public housing flats. They resemble the private condominiums and are enclosed within a gated compound with security, and amenities like swimming pools, clubhouses, playgrounds etc...

A secondary school which is three minutes' walk from my house.

This is a primary school beside the secondary school.

A junior college beside the primary school. We call them neighbourhood schools.

Another secondary school. This is a bit further off. But there are feeder bus services running through the estate, so it is not a problem where transport is concerned.

A nursing home.

The above are some of the facilities in the estate - just to give you a rough idea of life in Singapore. I will post more, as and when, I have something which I think might be of interest to you.
