Canada Study Permit in 20 Days | Student Direct Stream (SDS)

Student Direct Stream

Student Direct Stream

The Government of Canada understands that foreign nationals around the world are interested in the opportunity to study in Canada. As a result, international students in Canada are required to have valid study permit before they are authorized to study in Canada as per section 9(1) of the Immigration and Refugees Protection Regulations.

Canada has attracted a large number of international students from certain countries over the years. In order to expedite the process of obtaining a study permit for these foreign nationals, IRCC has created the Student Direct Stream (SDS).

In this post, you will find out more about the SDS and whether you are eligible for it if you are interested in studying in Canada.

What is the Student Direct Stream

The SDS allows eligible foreign nationals to apply for a study permit and have it processed in only 20 calendar days. Typically, non-SDS study permits are processed at a rate which depends on which country you are from. For some countries it may take several months before a study permit can be issued. However, with SDS, your study permit application can be processed quickly if you meet the eligibility requirements.

Who is Eligible

First of all, you must be a legal resident of one of the following countries:

Antigua and Barbuda
Brazil
China
Colombia
Costa Rica
India
Morocco
Pakistan
Peru
Philippines
Senegal
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Trinidad and Tobago
Vietnam

If you do not live in one of the countries above (even if you are a citizen), then you would not be eligible for the Student Direct Stream.

If you meet the criteria above, you will also need to:

have an acceptance letter from a designated learning institution
live outside of Canada when you apply
provide proof of payment for the first year of your tuition
have a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of $10,000 CAD
if planning to study in Quebec, have a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ) from the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration
get a medical exam prior to applying, if needed
get a police certificate prior to applying, if needed
have you most recent secondary or post-secondary school transcript(s)
obtain at least IELTS (General or Academic) band score 6.0 for every section for English, or a TEF Canada score of at least CLB 7 in each section
any other documents which may be requested

If you do not also meet the requirements above, then you would not be eligible for the Student Direct Stream.
