The story of HAARP, Earthquake and Hurricane

There is probably no astronomical research facility in the entire skyline as famous as HAARP, especially in recent years when the 2012 Apocalypse issue bursts. Whenever a large-scale disaster has claimed many lives, HAARP has always been a magnet for a number of sensational bombastic conspiracy theories. HAARP is considered a super-secret station that can only be entered by the top secret agents of the superpower who are ambitious to dominate the world entirely in realizing a new order for its sake.

The HAARP facility is regarded as part of the effort of manipulation and mastery of difficult natural phenomena such as earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, floods, and hunger. HAARP activity is even blamed for the fall of certain commercial aircraft, power outages, physical and mental illness in humans such as chronic fatigue syndrome and Gulf War syndrome and controlling human moods. Such an assumption is not just circulating the ordinary public because presidential caliber leader Hugo Chavez (Venezuela) believes it. Even Chavez considers HAARP to be responsible for the Haiti Earthquake in 2010, the deadliest earthquake in the Americas throughout history with more than 80,000 lives snatched. Finally, HAARP is also blamed for Sandy's storm that claimed more than 160 lives while ravaging the Caribbean and the US east coast including the New York metropolitan, with a total loss of at least US $ 20 billion.

But what exactly is HAARP?

Ionosphere

HAARP (High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program) is a joint research program (including incorporating elements of astronomy) to the Earth's atmosphere especially the ionosphere layer actively (using its own energy source). The goal is to analyze the dynamics of the ionosphere and investigate its potential for further technological development in order to improve radio communication and monitoring capabilities. This research program is non-confidential (unclassified), although some of its funds come from US military budgets poured into the Air Force Research Laboratory and AL (Office of Naval Research). The remainder is funded by the University of Alaska and DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency).

The University of Alaska plays a role because HAARP is located in Alaska, near Gakona (inland to the northeast of Anchorage), precisely at coordinates 62 ° 23 'LU 145 ° 09' BB. Its non-secret nature makes many prestigious scientific institutions participate in designing and building instruments as well as engaging in long-term research, such as UCLA, Stanford University, John Hopkins University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Polytechnic Institute of New York University and even from abroad such as the University of Tokyo (Japan).

The program has been initiated since 1990 although its construction began only in 1993 utilizing the former US AU Air Force Horizontal (OT) radar station which initially became an early detection unit for the movement of Soviet military aircraft, later closed after the end of the Cold War. Until 2008, development and research at the HAARP facility cost an average of US $ 14 million / year. This is cheap, say when compared to unmanned spacewalk launch programs to other planets as well as the construction of the latest observatories. In order to build, transmit and operate the first Mars explorers Mars Pathfinder robot alone required a cost of US $ 93 million / year in the period 1994-1997. Moreover, the latest robot like Curiosity.

However, with some funding from the US military and occupying the site of a former US AU radar station, there is no doubt from the start that HAARP has been suspected in particular as a highly-super-secret facility, especially by conspiracy theorists. It was Nick Begich who switched it through Angels Do not Play This HAARP (1997). Although Alaskans, Begich himself had never visited HAARP. While as a non-confidential research program, HAARP itself opens opportunities for anyone including from abroad to visit its facilities in every summer visit program. This asymmetry, between the principle of HAARP's openness on the one hand and the reluctance of Begich and other conspiratorial writers to visit him on the other, makes us wonder whether conspiratorial writings about HAARP are scientifically or even more so than the wild imaginations of their authors with the claims questionable.

Instruments and Research

HAARP has the main instrument of 180 high-frequency radio antenna occupying 13 hectares of land with a configuration of 12 x 15 units. This antenna transmits radio waves of a frequency of 2.7 to 10 MHz which can be arranged in the form of continuous or discrete signals, with 3.6 megawatts of energy. The signal has a maximum intensity of 3.6 microwatts per square centimeter or the equivalent of one-tenth of the intensity of the sun's light received by Earth's atmosphere.

The signals are transmitted to the ionosphere layer at a certain extent in order to run the ionospheric heating experiment, ie the effort of stimulating the Oxygen and Nitrogen atoms in the ionosphere layer using radio wave energy to study how the ionosphere layer in that part responds. This stimulation is essentially the same as the process of stimulation by the solar wind/storm particles that make up the aurora. So the ionospheric heating experiments are often referred to as artificial aurora experiments whose scale is much smaller than the actual aurora.

The majority of HAARP research is classified as basic research aimed at understanding the ionosphere layer further. Although it has been the subject of investigation for nearly a century and has even been used extensively in long distance radio communications considering its properties as a reflection of certain radio waves, the current knowledge of the ionosphere layer is still very limited. How variations of dynamics and their complexity to time scales ranging from minute to minute, day to day, from season to season to year-to-year are not widely understood.

On the other hand, investigating the ionosphere layer directly by placing the instrument there within a certain time (eg a week or a month) is very difficult. This is given the availability of current technology, ie, air balloons and satellites, equally unfit to be placed inside the ionosphere. The air balloon is unable to reach the ionosphere because the air is so thin for it. Instead, the satellites also can not orbit across them because the density of air molecules is still large enough so that the atmospheric drag is large enough that makes the satellite orbit directly corrected to then decay and fall back to Earth.

The ionospheric heating research is carried out in the form of ionospheric modulation, stimulating emission observations (like auroras) of electrons in the ionosphere, airglow and very low frequency (VLF) and extra-low frequency (ELF) radio waves produced by the ionosphere. Some of its astronomical researchers include meteor observations with non-light radio waves, radar echo reflection tests of the Moon, meteor impact observations of ionospheric dynamics, response observation and ionospheric recovery to solar storms and geomagnetic storms as well as observation of ionospheric disturbances effects on the quality of navigation satellite signals such as GPS.

Why is HAARP's research done in Alaska? The best location for ionospheric investigation and auroral performance is only in the region adjacent to the geomagnetic poles. And in the practical realm, only the points around the geographical north polar rim are qualified. And HAARP is not the only similar research facility. In Europe, there is a research station Tromso (Norway) which has a greater power, ie 1 gigawatt. While Russia operates the Sura (Vasilsurk) facility with a much larger power, which is 190 megawatts.

Disaster Maker?

With all the activities of HAARP, is it true that this facility can be utilized to generate a number of events such as earthquakes, tsunamis, storms/hurricanes and floods?

Unfortunately no. Although impressed creepy, but the basics of experiments ionospheric warming are actually in our secondary school. Basically, the atoms have a layered skin with each layer of skin occupied by certain energy electrons. These electrons can move from deeper skin (closer to the atomic nucleus) to the outer shell (farther from the atomic nucleus) in a promotional process that requires additional energy from the outside. Literally, the addition of this energy is called warming, because it causes the temperature to rise. In contrast, electrons can also experience excitation by moving from the outer skin to deeper skin. The excitation process is characterized by the release of energy, which generally takes the form of photons in both light and longer electromagnetic waves.

The heating of the ionosphere is a process of promoting Nitrogen and Oxygen atoms of the ionosphere layer using radio wave signals at a frequency of 2-10 MHz. As a result, there is an excitation process that emits radio waves on a wide spectrum of waves. These radio waves are captured by the HAARP antenna for further analysis.

Thus, HAARP activity focuses only on electromagnetic waves. The interaction of electromagnetic waves with matter is limited to the excitation-promoting process and the production of atomic particle-antiparticle pairs on an atomic scale. The process only takes place intensely if the radio wave has a very high-frequency spectrum in the form of X-rays and gamma, so both are known as ionizing rays. Radio waves that have lower frequencies are not ionizing.

Despite the process of promotion-excitation and pair production, it is not possible to accumulate its energy in a particular point in the atmosphere, let alone transfer it to another entirely different medium. There is no physical mechanism to do so. It is therefore very difficult to associate HAARP radio signals with the accumulation of energy, especially if the accumulation of energy is then considered a trigger of natural disasters. On the other hand, if there is an accumulation of energy due to HAARP signals, then there is the problem of time constraints that make the accumulative energy much smaller than the energy released by a natural disaster.

Case Study: Earthquake

For clarity let's do a simple calculation in a case study of the earthquake. Basically, an earthquake is the release of seismic energy in a short time that propagates in the Earth body as a seismic wave. An earthquake is called a massive earthquake if its minimum magnitude is 7 on the Richter scale, a figure equivalent to an energy release of 476 kilotons of TNT or 1,990 trillion Joules.

Let's assume a radio wave signal can be accumulated in the atmosphere to then be spontaneously released to produce acoustic energy. Taking an analogy to the explosion of meteors at atmospheric altitudes that vibrate the surface of the Earth, the propagation of acoustic waves in the atmosphere can trigger the propagation of Rayleigh waves (one of the earthquake waves) in the Earth's crust, with the ratio of acoustic energy to earthquake energy 5,000,000: 1. By Thus, to generate 1,990 trillions of Joule seismic energy, it takes enormous acoustic energy, reaching 9,950 million trillions of Joule.

Let's consider this acoustic energy as a result of a 100% conversion of the energy accumulated by HAARP radio signals. With HAARP energy at 3.6 megawatts (3.6 million Joules per second), in order to reach a figure of 9.950 million trillions of Joule then HAARP must be constantly switched on for 2.760 trillion seconds or equivalent to 87 million years! Thus HAARP must have been built and lit since the days of dinosaurs still haunted the corners of the Earth! This is totally absurd given the fact that the new HAARP was built in 1990.

Case Study: Storm

Through similar steps, we can also perform simple calculations for tropical storm case studies. Basically, a tropical storm, otherwise known as a storm (alone) or a typhoon, is a unique mechanism of the atmosphere to distribute the energy imbalances between tropical and subtropical regions as the Sun's annual pseudo motion. As a regional energy distribution agency, the energy content brought by tropical storms is enormous. A tropical storm that encompasses a circular area with 1,330 km of dimension capable of discharging 150 mm / day rainfall with a wind speed of 144 km / h has an energy of 30 to 12,400 megatons of TNT or 63 to 26,000 times greater than earthquake-released energy 7 on the Richter scale.

For tropical storm energy of 30 megatons TNT and assuming that energy is a 100% conversion of the energy accumulated by HAARP radio signals, HAARP must be constantly lit for 5.4 billion years! In other words, this calculation shows that HAARP must be in operation even since our solar system has not been born. Again, this obviously makes no sense.

Two examples of simple calculations show the attempt to link HAARP to a natural disaster makes no sense at all. So there is no relationship between HAARP with the various disasters that occur in all over the Earth.
