Addition and Subtraction Word Problems for 3rd Graders

In this post we will discuss addition and subtraction word problems. After learning all the addition and subtraction strategies in grade three kids get ready to apply these strategies in day to day life problems and we call them word problems in math language.

There are a few key words which give a clue about what to do with the numbers in the problem. For example, if there is the word total, that means we need to add all the numbers in the problem to get their totals. Words such as all together, together or sum indicative of addition of numbers given in the word problem.

On the other hand key words such as more, fewer, lesser, difference are indicative of subtraction of numbers given in the word problems. Remember in 3rd grade we always subtract the smaller number from the larger number.
