Bubonic Plague

source

Bubonic plague derives its name from the change which it causes in the human body and from the fact that it tends to strike large numbers of the population at one time. Bubonic means a swelling of a certain glands in the body. The disease is very contagious.

The disease is spread by a flea which has been living on an infected rat. The cause of the disease is a short, rod-shaped bacterium with rounded ends called the Bacillus pestis. When a person becomes infected, a painful swelling of the glands is found in the groin, armpit, neck, or even inside the chest, in which case pneumonia develops. These rounded swellings vary from the size of a walnut to that of a goose egg. They can become so swollen that they burst and become open sores. Black and blue spots sometimes found on the body gave rise, in the early days, to the term Black Death.

A bubonic plague art.

Actually these spots marked the bite of the flea carrying the disease from rat to man. The victim of bubonic plague is very sick. He develops a high temperature in the first, second, and third days. The death rate is high, especially at the height of an epidemic. Prevention is a community problem. Exterminate the rats!

The use of the newly developed antibiotics has cut down the death rate from this disease. For explorers and others who travel in countries where the disease is present, a vaccine made from cultures of the germ has been developed.
