This is the second part of my series, featuring our ‘national hero’ in sports after Dato’ Lee Chong Wei, former world number one, badminton player.
This time, I am sharing the caricature of Nur Herman Majid, our hero in 110m hurdle...
I chose to draw Nur Herman, not just because of his fame along side Istiaq Mubaraw, Thalatha Mahadi or even Marina Chin, but it was due to his unique hairstyle and also his ‘fang’ which made him easily reconisable among the athletes.😊
I was quite wrong when I thought it should be easier to draw his face and body, on the other hand, I had to try many times before I got it right, to my satisfactions...
Due to my tight schedule with my jobs, I tried to meet the deadline given in between my free time and spent as little time as possible to get things done quickly. Its very true that, wise men say, ‘you cannot rush arts’. So this was the result....
I showed the sketch to my daughter, expecting some positive comments to comfort me as usual, buu it took her a few seconds before she asked me
“Is it Nur Herman?” With a big question mark on her face...
“Hmmm supposed to be him...” frustratedly, I was...
“You could do it bettet, Pa...” She smiled and walked away...
I stared at the sketch for awhile and told myself, “you still got time....” Right away, i put it into a drawer of rejected artworks amd started working on a new piece of paper...
Started with the FACE
Then, the action, or rather the way he jumped the hurdle. This time, i looks like more energetic .
So, I decided to put together the face to the body for the new sketch.
Since I didn’t have much time now, I decided to color it straight away.....
I used Winsor and Newton water color on 300mg water color paper as usual...
Finally, the caricature was framed and eligible to be echobited at malaysia Cartoon & Comic House, just on time.
