connecting from the edge no cellular networks needed, just open skies and open roads - starlink for rv launched!

yep, great little email to receive this morning.

i’ve been waiting for this for a while tbh and i thought it might take a little longer to be an actual thing because i thought it was gonna be too niche but i’m guessing the rv community has spoken. freaking awesome, i’m stoked!

so if you don’t know currently with the starlink you need to have a fixed place for your starlink setup to operate from — i guess they use this information to triangulate where the satellite panel needs to look too for the consolation of satellites so you can get the up and down link.

now previously it was able to have that fixed address changed, if for instance you have a holiday home or travelling to family or buying a new house, you wanna be able to change it.

with rv life, your probably going somewhere else every day, maybe fifty miles at a time. that really wasn’t something starlink supported until now (at least properly) — i’ve seen reports of people changing where they are and that worked out fine but it seems they actually have a more freed up version now.

Users can expect high speed, low latency internet in areas marked “Available”, and notably slower speeds during events with many collocated users, or during hours of peak usage in areas marked as “Waitlist”, where residential users are prioritized. Prioritizing residential makes it possible to offer Starlink for RVs immediately with minimal impact to the most loaded portions of the network.

it looks like starlink availability map is showing “cells” where you can get connectivity for rv usage which is hella useful, while it maybe limited in some areas just being able to get social media updates or push your next video for youtube is hella useful where their are no cell towers — just point to the sky and off you go.

you might find that the offering is way more expensive that a data sim and a cellular package but currently even a 5g wifi unit ain’t cheap and your probably not gonna get 5g reception at the edge, boon docking, out in the literally sticks — having connection in places you wouldn’t normally is gonna really open up arts and media, going to offered places with epic batteries and connectivity.

either way, heading up to the fully modded out roof space (you know with the artificial grass) and the starlink hunting for a mini signs of life (a.k.a the film contact — “i’m good to go!”) and then boom, connectivity back into the grid, alive, available connected to a spinning satellite cluster revolving around the earth ;)

fucking bad ass technology!
