Winter clothes for Ukrainian women (Over 10 KGs!)

With consistency and pure will, I have been able to procure a huge collection of winter clothes for the Ukrainian women in my shelter and around it. I honestly did not imagine I could get something as huge as this, but I guess my hard work is paying off. With winter around the corner, this bag of clothes will be very helpful to many Ukrainian women.

Last week I was a little disheartened as I lost the chance to bring the Ukrainian kids few large bags of toys. I could not get my hands on a bike since the friend who always lends me the bike had to go to work with it. Then again, I have no clue how would I bring all those bags of toys on a bike. It was soon given away to someone else.

One of my colleagues has become very supportive of my initiative. When she learned that I had this incredible opportunity of giving away a big lot of warm clothes to the Ukrainian women but didn't have the bike she volunteered to drive me there and bring the bag back to the shelter. Even if I'd have the bike it'd be heavy and the pick-up location was almost an hour and half away, so it would have been ncredibly difficult for me. I am telling you I was so happy that she had noticed the good work being done and wanted to help me help others.

There are clothes of almost all sizes in this bag. The nice lady who was giving it away told me that these are her old clothes that she doesn't use anymore. When she learned that I'd be giving it away to Ukrainian women, her daughter chipped in and threw in some extra clothes. Sweaters, hoodies, scarves, it has a huge assortment of warm clothes and of different sizes.

I am yet to go through the entire bag since I have been busy with work and my own document related stuff. But the plan is to seperate this huge lot of clothes according to sizes and styles. Most of the women from Eastern Ukraine could really use these clothes. They are the ones who mostly came empty handed, just like you must have noticed with Pri, and are unable to ship their clothes or personal items as Eastern Ukraine is a "high risk" area.

I am distributing all the items I find through Ukrainian telegram and viber groups. I make a short announcement and give it away in a first come first serve basis. There are plenty of exceptions - especially with things that I know a specific family or person could use. In those cases I approach them directly and give it to them without making them to go through the embarassment of asking for anything. Sometimes it takes a few days to find them but it is so worth it.

In other cases, where I make announcements, most of the Ukrainians in the area know where to find me. Some even know my exact room and come knocking. I feel like I am approching my main goal of making a huge difference. There is no judgement, no need to ask, no barriers. I am happy that the Ukrainians feel free to approach me whenever.

If I can continue in this pace, and consistently, I think I can eventually have a larger group of people join my efforts. Just like my colleague who had found it in her heart to help me out help others, or my friend who freely lends his bike to me. We are in this together, after all.
