Portugal defender Pepe celebrated his 100th appearance for the national team with a header to equalize when his team drew 1-1 against World Cup runners-up Croatia in a friendly match played on Thursday.
Croatia opened the scoring in the 18th minute when striker Ivan Perisic, one of five members of the first team to play in the World Cup final against France, grabbed a wild ball after bouncing around Portugal's defense.Pepe, who was appointed captain for this match, equalized 14 minutes later with a header to head Pizzi's cross.
Portugal rested their all-time leading scorer Cristiano Ronaldo, who is still adapting to his move from Real Madrid to Juventus, while Sergio Oliveira and Gedson Fernandes had the chance to make their national team debuts after appearing as substitutes in the second round.
"We played well with many young players who tried to show their value," Pepe (35) told RTP television.
"I am very happy. I am grateful for this opportunity and all that Portugal has given me and I am trying to enjoy every moment."
Portugal dominated the second half and almost won the match when Mario Rui's cross was deflected into the post of Croatian defender Antonio Milic. Croatian midfielder Luka Modric received applause from the home crowd when he was replaced in the 55th minute.
Croatia goalkeeper Danijel Subasic and striker Mario Mandzukic have announced their retirement from international football, while midfielder Ivan Rakitic is rested for this match.
