The Monster

Card name: Mycelic Morphoid
Edition: Chaos Legion
Rarity: Common
Splinter: Earth
Ability: Thorns, starting at Level 3
Lore:
Mycelic Morphoids are in a constant state of growth and development. As part of Queen Mycelia's brood, Morphoids work to spread the growing blight on Praetoria.

Infected themselves by the poison, they take root near streams and rivers, contaminating it with the blight. In turn, the waters feed them, and a second Morphoid sprouts from the original. Together, the two travel as one until they split and continue the process.

Line Up and the Battlefield

Obsidian was my summoner, which gives +1 Magic damage. For my monsters, in the frontline was my pseudo-tank, Mycelic Morphoid, followed by my main tank, Pelacor Mercenary. Next in line was Lord Arianthus and Regal Peryton, and then Queen Mycelia. At the backline was Fungus Fiend.

The Line Up

Mycelic Morphoid has only two health and, for me to maximize it, I had to put it in the frontline and act as my pseudo or fake/temporary tank. With Queen Mycelia's Protect and the Target Practice ruleset, I was sure that it will either die from the Earthquake or from the enemy's tank or any other melee attacker, which will trigger its Thorns.

As I expected it to be eliminated early, I had Pelacor Mercenary next to it. With its Flying ability, it wouldn't receive Earthquake damage and can regenerate with its Heal(ing) ability.

Lord Arianthus was positioned after Pelacor Mercenary as I wanted it to receive all incoming damages from Ranged and Magic monsters. With its Shield ability, it can withstand the damage from the Earthquake. With its Void and Magic Reflect, reinforced by Queen Mycelia's Amplify, I expected it to take and reflect high Magic damage.

Regal Peryton is a powerful card and is the only Earth monster in Chaos Legion edition with the Flying ability. It works perfectly with Obsidian and the Earthquake ruleset.

Queen Mycelia's abilities have already been highlighted, except for its Triage ability. I anticipated it to survive the first round and will be able to trigger it, healing Lord Arianthus at least once.

The Battlefield

The enemy used a Water deck, with Kelya Frendul as its summoner and all of their monsters possessing the Flying ability, which meant they wouldn't receive any damage from the Earthquake.

Round 1

  • The Phantom of the Abyss attacked first and managed to inflict 2 damage to Lord Arianthus. In response, the latter reflected 3 damage! Regal Peryton dealt 3 more damage to it, leaving it with 1 health.
  • Pelacor Bandit attacked Fungus Fiend but was able to withstand it due to its armor.
  • Ice Pixie attempted to damage Lord Arianthus, but dealt 0 damage due to the latter's Void skill. Regardless, it reflected the attempted Magic attack and dealt 2 damage.
  • Gargoya Lion attacked Mycelic Morphoid, destroying its armor. This triggered the latter's Thorns, returning 3 damage due to Queen Mycelia's Amplify ability, resulting to the destruction of its armor, too. An eye for an eye! It then dealt 1 damage to it, reducing its health to 5.
  • Queen Mycelia, as expected, was able to heal Lord Arianthus for 2 health, negating the damage caused by Phantom of the Abyss and, eventually, eliminating it after dealing 2 damage.

Round 2

  • The Earthquake finished off Mycelic Morphoid and Fungus Fiend, dealt 1 damage to Lord Arianthus's armor, and eliminated Queen Mycelia's armor.
  • Regal Peryton got rid of Albatross, followed by Pelacor Bandit attacking Queen Mycelia - which was again in vain due to her Triage ability, healing herself eventually.
  • Pelacor Mercenary damaged Gargoya Lion and then knocked out by Queen Mycelia.

Round 3

With only one enemy monster remaining, Pelacor Bandit, Regal Peryton ended the game after dealing 3 damage to it.

Closing

The strategy of using Mycelic Morphoid as a temporary tank worked perfectly with Queen Mycelia's Protect and Amplify abilities. It is important to note that it could have failed as such if Ranged and Magic monsters weren't given the Snipe ability.

It should work well as a meat shield for Sneak attacks, so I shall try putting him at the backline next time.

Mycelic Morphoid is not difficult to like. For its 1 mana and and Thorns ability, it can be a useful alternative to Creeping Ooze or other 1-mana or 0-mana monsters.
