Después de una ligera pausa en lo que a ciertas películas de envergadura se refiere decido volver con una que me llamó poderosamente la atención, lo hizo por dos razones: la primera por su director que no es otro que Damien Chazelle, un ganador de Oscar gracias a La La Land y que también dirigió otro increíble film como lo es Whiplash y la segunda es por el elenco tan variado que íbamos a ver, uno conformado por actores de una gran talla. Pero además hubo algo que me voló la cabeza y es que sabiendo los dos antecedentes de este director puedes más o menos imaginar que tipo de película te vas a conseguir, cierto? - pues no, nada que tiene que ver, quizás si hay unos matices por ahí, pero la realidad es que estamos ante una película en donde el desenfreno, la locura, la excitación, los excesos y sobre todo el drama son los ingredientes principales.

Siento que películas como estas cada vez son menos comunes en el cine de la actualidad, nos estamos acostumbrando a la inmediatez, a querer ver un film de una hora y media y no siempre debería de ser así. Babylon dura tres horas y a pesar de eso les puedo decir que es una de las mejores películas que he visto últimamente, dura tres horas porque creo que el tipo de historias que Damien quería contar no caben en tan poco tiempo y es que este film es una radiografía y hasta una critica social a las grandes elites del cine y de Hollywood y de como las crisis y las diferentes vidas personales de los protagonistas pueden convertirse en un desastre gracias a la exposición de una fama desmedida. Lo interesante? - que todo esto parece ser atemporal, pasaba antes y sigue pasando ahora. Pero bueno, hablemos un poco entonces de este gran film.

Esta historia tiene varios protagonistas, tiene a Nellie LaRoy (Margot Robbie), Jack Conrad (Brad Pitt), Manny Torres (Diego Calva) y al propio cine en si mismo, esto último es raro pero es la verdad. El cine constantemente está cambiando, avanzando, siempre buscando la forma de ser mejor y eso es lo que vemos acá, en los Ángeles a mediados de los años 20. En ese momento el boom era el cine mudo, un cine sencillo y que mucho esfuerzo no necesitaba hasta que de repente se comienza a hacer la transición al cine hablado, al cine son sonido y este cambio agarró a muchos desprevenidos. Muchos de estos actores en su vida habían hablado delante de una cámara, no entendían porque hacerlo ahora por lo que algunos se lo tomaron bien y otros pues, no del todo. Dicen que los cambios siempre son buenos, tristemente en esta historia no aplica mucho ese pensamiento.

Nellie es un desastre de persona pero que siempre tuvo sus metas claras, ella quería ser una estrella, bueno no, ella era una estrella solo que aún no había habido nadie quien la descubriera. Jack Conrad es un actor que era el más grande del cine mudo, la gallina de los huevos de oro, todos los estudios querían trabajar con él. El detalle? - pues que su vida personal era un caos en donde la estabilidad no existía, además de que con la llegada del cine sonoro empezaría su caída sin él saberlo. Y por último Manny o Manuel era un inmigrante que lo que quería era estar en un set de cine, la historia nos llevará a como pudo hacerse paso y "lograr" lo que tanto anhelaba siempre. Es un film lleno de tragedias, de desdichas y donde vemos que detrás de todo ese mundo "perfecto" existe una profunda oscuridad y soledad de las que muy pocos logran escapar. La trama nos lleva a como un día se puede estar en lo más alto y al otro estar en el completo olvido.

Nosotros de una forma u otra sabemos como son y como se comportan las elites del cine, todo desde un punto muy superficial claro está, solo conocemos la punta del iceberg pero podemos tener bastante claro como se mueve todo en esos fondos. Esta película nos muestra como es esa realidad, no es algo que no sepamos, pero verlo de primera mano es algo que siempre va a impactar. Como les dije puede que sea una vida muy triste, vacía y que todo eso lleve a los excesos, es tenerlo todo, es estar deslumbrado constantemente por la fama pero a la vez no tener con quien compartir todo lo logrado y es ahí, precisamente en ese punto, en donde ocurre el quiebre que se ve en estas historias. Es un drama muy profundo y hasta muy realista lo que viven estas personas al punto de que es muy fácil sentir empatía por ellos, tanto Nellie como Jack son dos de los mejores ejemplos, la decadencia es notoria por lo que si, es muy triste de ver.

Pero hay una dualidad también y es que en todas esas situaciones hay un ligero toque de comedia que va de la mano con todas estas escenas rimbombantes de fiestas y desenfreno total. Son cosas muy comunes pero que de alguna forma están incluidas para hacer más absurdo todo dentro lo realistas que son. Se que es complicado de explicar pero cuando la vean o si ya la vieron la primera media hora del film, que es una especie de intro, describe a la perfección lo que les hablo. No son escenas fuertes pero si subidas de tono, hay mucha sexualidad, fetichismos, indecencia, comportamientos inapropiados, todo dentro de la "normalidad" que supondría estar inmerso en ese mundo. La comedia es clave amigos, te ríes de lo que menos esperas al punto de suavizarlo todo.

Entrando un poco en la cinematografía acá es donde aplica los matices de los que les hablaba antes del director con respecto a sus dos películas anteriores. De las cosas que más se disfrutan es la banda sonora y el como gracias a la música podemos conectar con diferentes escenas. Damien usa este recurso muchas veces en el film para generar tensión, sosiego y sobre todo unas transiciones impecables entre las historias que se están viviendo en simultaneo, es como ver una especie de musical y ojo, yo detesto los musicales pero esto está en otro nivel. Y por último es un viaje a la historia porque si eres amante del cine verás como se hacía éste en esos años 20, la forma de grabar y del manejo en un set era un absurdo, todo era manual y en vivo, el mínimo detalle podía echar a perder una película entera, el sonido era vital y las cámaras más aún. Todo el concepto visual es impresionante, hay un par de escenas espectaculares, una de Nellie caminando hacia la oscuridad y el dialogo entre Jack y Elinor St Jhon (Jean Smart) valen completamente la película, si la vieron sabrán de que les hablo y sino, a prestarle atención.

The whole visual concept is impressive, there are a couple of spectacular scenes, one of Nellie walking into the darkness and the dialogue between Jack and Elinor St Jhon (Jean Smart) are completely worth the film, if you saw it you will know what I'm talking about and if not, pay attention to it.

Las actuaciones a mi parecer fueron de diez, cada vez me convenzo más que Margot Robbie está en un nivel exageradamente alto, la calidad de interpretación de esa mujer es sublime, ella me atrevería a decir es el centro de la película. Su historia es muy común pero la forma en como la va llevando y la va haciendo suya con cada crisis y problema que se le presenta es muy buena. Además de que el carisma que irradia es muy notorio. Increíble actuación, rabia, ira, alegría, drama, tristeza, angustia, desesperación, todo eso en menos de 5 minutos, así de buena es. En cuanto a Brad Pitt, pues que decir, es otro que estos papeles en donde la inestabilidad emocional y el ser una persona con un drama muy profundo extrañamente se le dan muy bien. Pueden pasar los años y seguirá siendo un muy buen actor, siento que con él se puede empatizar mucho y esto es gracias a lo que transmite.

El personaje de Diego Calva es muy curioso, es una actuacion simple y decente pero dentro de la historia tiene un peso enorme, más de lo esperado y en lo personal su final es también de lo mejor de la película, muy acorde a su historia y lo que siempre buscó. A este film le doy un 9/10, me gustó muchísimo, las actuaciones, la historia, la visión del director, la forma en como nos mostró unas vidas llenas de ambición, locura y del como si no somos cuidadosos podemos terminar borrados completamente del mapa. Los invito a que la vea, super recomendada, en mi caso y repito, de lo mejor que he visto en meses. Por acá les dejo el tráiler.
