Recognizing myself through my Reflections on Afrovenezolanidad in Conditions of Equality.

Saludos apreciada Comunidad HIVE.

Greetings, dear HIVE Community. Here I present my new post, continuing with my axis of interest, alternating the contents between the simple and the complex. In this opportunity I am going to refer to my reflections on Afrovenezolanidad, starting from contextualized references.

Afro-Venezuelanity began as a process from the very moment when the slave trade began in America, within the jurisdiction of the regional political and economic entity that encompassed what from 1777 onwards was identified as the Captaincy General of Venezuela. During its validity, the commercial monopoly was established by the Guipuzcoana Company, before which there were uprisings and movements against it on the part of the whites, owners of haciendas and plantations, at the same time that they faced the rebellions of enslaved Africans and rebellious descendants in search of their freedom. These actions remained a constant feature: before and after Independence, they spoke out in rejection of those who dominated them.

June 24, 1821 marked a milestone for our country: the triumph of the Mantuan whites, seconded and supported by the so-called popular masses, in the military field, by which the Independence of Venezuela was achieved. Territorially, this was defined in its Constitution as in the preceding attempts, by the principle of Uti Possidetis Iuris, whose meaning is translated in that aspect "what we possessed when we depended on theGeneral Captaincy of Venezuela, will continue to be possessed when established as an Independent Republic". This constitutional principle is still in force, and it is within it that I will focus some reflections on the issue at hand.

Venezuelan culture can be characterized as a culture of resistance to values, physical and social conditions imposed since ancient times. The political structure of the country has gone through different and significant changes, a situation that has not occurred in the socio-cultural aspect. The existence of a society defined by dominant groups to the detriment of other dominated groups, the possessors and the dispossessed, has always been preserved.

In this last sector, as a repetitive condition, we find the Afro-descendants, with a greater sense of belonging, the Afro-Venezuelans. This concept refers to the ethnic sector of the population with phenotypical and cultural characteristics, which define us as descendants of the enslaved Africans who arrived in the country, in our territory, and who in different ways have managed to preserve part of their legacy

In the physical aspect, the Afro-Venezuelan and Afro-descendant population in general, is characterized by dark skin pigmentation, curly hair, strong and well-defined build and shapes, pronounced lips and nose. In terms of cultural expressions, music, dances, religious, handicraft, linguistic, architectural, gastronomic and instrumental aspects have been maintained, as well as the geographical location.

Although there is still much to investigate and systematize, it is evident that for Afro-Venezuelans, from the very moment in which the colony began, a constant has been maintained for them: exclusion from many benefits and therefore social achievements based on the prevailing racism explicitly and legally in its beginnings, and in an underhand and well intricate way in the current social context and the modern and contemporary attraction and acceptance of their cultural expressions.

Ligia Martínez, from social psychology, states that once the racist, discriminatory, excluding ideology has taken root, it can survive and manifest itself in an underhanded way, "...but to exist underhandedly does not mean not to exist, but rather that it is a real, active presence, only not officialized or explicit" (Montañez, 1993.29).

We BLACKS have always been treated with pejorative condition, linked at all times to the lowest social structure and in extreme working conditions or of low value: now laborers, domestics, gardeners, now teachers, teachers, nurses, conditioned with roles in the tertiary sector, ie, service providers, etc., not because of the labor condition, since it exalts, but the little remuneration and respect received that limits or exempts us from having promotion and better living conditions, we are recognized in many areas by the musical gifts that we have a lot, an innate condition,

In mental and social constructs, being black is identified with socially impermissible actions, it is related to bad, negative and ignorance. As for women, in which case I include myself, the "valuative" expressions of the attractiveness of a white opposite sex person, are both racist and morally humiliating, it is common to hear: "esa negraaaa; negra rica, sabrosa; es negra, pero bonita, es negra pelo malo" and countless expressions that have a double discriminatory effect: being black (Afro-Venezuelan for those of us who respect ourselves), and being a woman.

Before and after 1854, this condition has persisted. In that year José Gregorio Monagas granted freedom to the enslaved, but not for empathy or philanthropic purposes, but for the economic interests of the landowners, since maintaining them economically represented a burden, which is why the Afros stopped being social slaves and became "free" laborers.”

To be effective and actively Free, we Afro-descendants, Afro-Venezuelans must and deserve to live in an environment of respect and appreciation to stop being a reference of poverty, ignorance and marginality. A personal experience: once I was sharing with friends in a restaurant and at one point I decided to go to the bar to cancel, at a table people who were there asked me for the bill with tip included, which obviously I refused and explained, but in reality the experience remained, the experience that other people do not assume as such. It seems simple and insignificant, but there it is subliminally present the profile with which an Afro person is referred to. It seems simple and insignificant, but there is subliminally present the profile that refers to an Afro person, cases like this are very repetitive, avoiding these conditions to people who are dedicated to musical expressions, handicrafts and lately in religiosity.

The processes of dehumanization, depersonalization and acculturation still persist, although not in the same way. In the different governments and periods, there has been talk of "social and cultural equality", that there is only one culture, whose guidelines are determined by the stereotypes that correspond to the dominant sectors. We are excluded and stigmatized by this homogenization those of us who have ethnic and cultural conditions "different" from the accepted patterns.I explain with an example: the stereotype of female beauty is visualized and accepted as a white woman, with long, light hair, light eyes and a slim, well-styled complexion; the antithesis is the Afro woman with dark skin pigmentation, curly hair, dark eyes and other characteristics of her being, who also carries a social weight and may not necessarily be slim.

Cortesía de Prexels In search of the "acceptable

It is a must that the beauty profile of a woman and of man should be adapted to her origin and not be evaluated by comparison. This leads very often to endorracism, the afro man or woman tends to relate affectively with people different from their being, not with their own ethnicity, of course, in things and cases of love everything is allowed, and it is not that we want to fight racism with racism, it is a matter that each one does it with sensitivity to their origin and not by denial induced subliminally in opportunities; in these cases the skin whitening is produced, in a more common way "to improve the race", since there are afro men and women who are not recognized, that is to say, they do not accept their own ethnicity since they follow other stereotypes.

Stanza from Corrío Pavo Real, original by César del Ávila: "...to all the blacks present I am going to advise them to combine colors, that race is natural; that a black man with a black woman is like night without a moon; and a white man with a white woman is like milk and foam".

The previous one is one of the stanzas of the Venezuelan CorrIo Pavo Real, of which multiple interpretations of its connotations can be made, in this case, I want to refer to the naive message of the author and socially one of the subliminal forms with which it is possible to induce contrary attitudes towards people of their own origin.

Another social expression loaded with social prejudices is, for example: "White with medical gown, black with chichero gown" These expressions summarize, to a great extent, the result of the globalizing vision of homogeneity over cultural equality that leads to a sector of the population that is difficult to accept, to manage in their spaces with ethnic shame, submission, psychologically with fears and/or rebellion, self-exclusion, school desertion, endorracism.

The people do not assume themselves as Afro-descendants, as Afro-Venezuelans and if they were born from whitening unions, they easily forget their ethnic past, without realizing or not caring that with such attitude, they strengthen the scope and social constructs of the dominant stereotypes. In this sense, this reality was verified when in 2011 the population census was carried out, in which questions were asked about ethnic recognition in case of being considered black, Afro-descendants, mestizos and of such a wide pyramidal base with these typologies, out of 100% of the population, only 3.6% of the same figure was recognized as such, contradictory if evidencedif generic characters of the wider Venezuelan population.

In view of what I have just mentioned, in many parts of the world, including Venezuela, multiple positions have arisen in the field of Cultural Ideological Resistance from researchers and recognized authors as well as organizations that I call Literary and Cultural Maroons, who are dedicated to the study of the subject in depth and are increasingly penetrating spheres previously not allowed, as a product of the documentation and substantiation of the Afro-Venezuelan contents.

Thanks to this, many manifestations and expressions have been valued in terms of their origin, currently and recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage of Humanity, such as the Drums of San Juan de Curiepe, Parranda de San Pedro de Guatire, Los Diablos Danzantes de Yare, among others. This is a task that this organization set itself in order to value these contents in the program it leads, called The Slave Route, where researchers on the subject from all over the world converge.

The purpose of all these Afro-Venezuelan actions is to fight against the oblivion of our historical memory, against racism and devaluation of African and Afro-descendant experiences, as well as to get us out of the neglect that we have received in terms of public policies. These policies should be aimed at real equality, with the goal of inclusion, the criterion of accepting diversity, interacting and coexisting with it. We cannot affirm that Venezuela is in its totality mestizo, since with it the typical characters that define each one of the cultural differences are blurred.

Parallel to the cultural sphere, these Literary Maroons have raised the urgent need to incorporate Ancestral and Afro-Venezuelan History into the National Basic Curriculum, at all levels and modalities. That is to say, in addition to the legal and social demands requested through reparations, they should also become part of the academic content that students will handle, in order to strengthen the determination of diversity, multiculturalism and respect for diversity, which does not give room for racial hatred.

"Societies that inherit a culture from which an important part of itself has been amputated, are faced with the urgent need to rescue the lost heritage, reinstate it in the public coffers and elaborate with it a richer and more plural collective image that allows all people, regardless of their group of origin, to identify themselves with the common heritage...We are currently in a phase of rescue of lost goods. The knowledge elaborated by and from a private life is breaking down the walls that kept it isolated from a public life. This means having a new way of conceptualizing reality and a wider cultural repertoire and ways of acting". SASTRE, Genoveva et al., How to learn from Equal Opportunities.134,135.

The population of future professionals in Venezuela must be trained from the beginning with a broader and more inclusive criterion of diversity, with which they must interact throughout their lives, with the purpose of obtaining a just society, balanced in that order and that allows them to develop with security and positive entrepreneurship in the different areas of their interest, so that the development of their personality is not the product of external patterns, but corresponds to their own will, which they dedicate themselves to it, without further limitations.

At present, students do not formally receive any type of information about the subject matter that I present. In my interactions with my students at the University level, I have detailed the complete lack of knowledge and interest on elementary aspects about it and they limit themselves to recite what is presented without giving it a real value, in this sense they affirm to have NEVER received any information related to the subject.

In this sense, SASTRE, op. cit. points out that the school transmission of knowledge as it is programmed, leads to an education that discriminates students on the basis of their origin and social condition and calls into question the utopia of equality under these conditions.

I also consider the collective of afro-descendant activists, that in order to achieve a real equality, it must be rooted, from all the mentioned ways, the wide social and cultural representation that integrates "effectively" the plurality of knowledge without establishing hierarchies, but also taking into consideration that the feasible result of this process is not used for purposes of any interest other than the identity, recognition, valuation and interaction within the society visualized in this way, I mean, that its insertion and pluralistic consideration does not imply to correspond with a quota of external interest imposed beyond the social harmony itself.

Among the activist collectives, Cimarrones Literarios y Culturales venezolanos comprometidos, we can mention Juan Pablo Sojo, Miguel Acosta Saignes, Federico Brito Figueroa, Jesús "Chucho" García, Argelia Laya, Reinaldo Bolívar, José Marcial Guedez Ramos, among others. Among the organizations that act with the integration of numerous groups from different parts of the country are the ROA (network of Afro-Venezuelan organizations), the RAV (network of Venezuelan groups).

The same directed and oriented by people sensitized according to the subject among whom, among many, we have Jesús "Chucho" García, Casimira Monasterios, Enrique Arrieta Chourio, Noel Márquez, Argenis Delgado, Aníbal Márquez, Beatriz Aiffil, Norma Romero, Luisa Pérez Madriz (Luisin), Reinaldo Bolívar, Gerónimo Sanchez, Modesto Ruiz, who within them have underpinned achievements such as the constitutional consideration of the multiethnic and pluricultural condition of Venezuelan society, the law against Social Discrimination, Racism and Xenophobia, which amended a customary and explicit discriminatory action in areas of the east of the capital city, where people of African descent were prevented access to recreational nightclubs just because they were "black"; other achievements.

In terms of institutions, INCODIR (National Institute against Racial Discrimination), CONADECAFRO (National Council for the Development of Afro-descendant Venezuelan Communities), the creation of Interculturality Directorates and Coordinations in the management sectors of the Educational System to plan actions for the benefit of the student community, sponsorship and promotion of cultural expressions in Afro-descendant settlements, among others, have arisen.

Through culture and education, there is an arduous task: to prevent the African culture that settled in our country, brought to the present day genetically and culturally by their descendants, from continuing to be diluted under a concept, for now, of non-explicit equality, racist, globalizing diverse cultural identities such as Afro-descendant and aboriginal, as well as to decolonize the active belief of the supremacy of a dominant sector over dominated sectors.
