Hola querida red, para comenzar les comento que este viaje era mi última meta en Manizales, tenía pensado subir de a poco para conocer en subida. Esto no es más que mi forma de hacer las cosas, nada más. Pero como la vida, el universo, dios o como quieran llamarle a algunos acontecimientos repentinos pues nos cambia los planes de un día a otro. Uno no puede dejar de tomar las oportunidades que nos ponen en frente, pues yo tomé la que me correspondió. Ver el amanecer en El Nevado del Ruiz.
Hello dear network, to begin with I would like to tell you that this trip was my last goal in Manizales, I had planned to go up a little at a time to get to know uphill. This is just my way of doing things, nothing more. But as life, the universe, god or whatever you want to call some sudden events change our plans from one day to another. One cannot help but take the opportunities that are put in front of us, and I took the one that corresponded to me. Seeing the sunrise in El Nevado del Ruiz.
Laura y David son mis jefes, personas muy amables y de buen corazón. ¡Una chimba de gente! Se diría en la jerga colombiana. Un día comunicaron en el grupo del trabajo que iban a ver el amanecer en el Nevado, el día festivo. Lunes para ser exactos. Como yo desde hace tiempo uso mí día libre para explorar y conocer, ese día no sería diferente; yo iba a salir. Pero, ellos comunican en el grupo que subirían al Nevado y que tenían 3 cupos libres en su camioneta y quien quisiera se anotara. Y yo dije “Yoooooooooooooo” y con ello me anotaba para subir al Nevado. Personalmente creo es el Universo y nuestra energía la que hace que algunas pasen.
Así que sin más, todo se puso en marcha.
Laura and David are my bosses, very kind and kind-hearted people, a great bunch of people! As we would say in Colombian slang. One day they communicated in the workgroup that they were going to see the sunrise in the Nevado, the holiday. Monday to be exact. As I have long used my day off to explore and get to know, that day would be no different; I was going out. But, they told the group that they were going up to the Nevado and that they had 3 free spots in their van and whoever wanted to sign up. And I said "Yoooooooooooooooooo" and with that, I signed up to climb the Nevado. I believe it is the Universe and our energy that makes some things happen. So without further ado, everything got underway.
La aventura debía comenzar a las 2:00 am para mí porque yo llevaría el tinto (café) para todos, 10 personas para ser exactos. La salida era una hora después, es largo el recorrido. Montaña arriba, el equipaje debía ser puntual: abrigo, guantes, protector solar, lentes de sol, chocolates, agua, un short, toalla, el tinto y dinero para comida y la entrada para las termales. Hice todo, llevé lo que se necesitaba.
The adventure was to start at 2:00 am for me because I would bring the tinto (coffee) for everyone, 10 people to be exact. The departure was an hour later, it's a long way. Up the mountain, the luggage had to be on time: coat, gloves, sunscreen, sunglasses, chocolates, water, a pair of shorts, towel, the tinto and money for food and the entrance fee for the hot springs. I did everything, I took what was needed.
Y así pasó, me desperté a la hora, hice el tinto y vinieron por mí. Así que buscamos a Bryan, compañero de trabajo y luego fuimos por Gio Torres (Primo de David), Biólogo y guía en la travesía. En la camioneta éramos Laura y su esposo David, Manolo (La mascota de ellos) Bryan, Gio y yo. Luego comenzamos el viaje, en el trayecto se nos unió el resto del grupo, Mary, familia y amigos. Los cinco faltantes.
And so it happened, I woke up on time, I made the red wine and they came for me. So we looked for Bryan, a co-worker, and then we went for Gio Torres (David's cousin), Biologist, and guide on the trip. In the van, we were Laura and her husband David, Manolo (their pet) Bryan, Gio, and me. Then we started the trip, on the way we were joined by the rest of the group, Mary, family, and friends. The missing five.
El trayecto se nos hizo algo complejo por la neblina y lluvia, algo muy común en la ciudad y zona. Es la cordillera colombiana, no puede ser diferente por mucho tiempo. Luego de hora y algo más, llegamos al punto de subida, una cascada que nos indicaba el inicio del destino. El cerro Guali. El clima no era el mejor, muchísima neblina y la lluvia persistía. Gio no vio problema alguno, nadie lo vio. Sabíamos que podría ser así, ellos más que yo. Luego de adecuarnos para subir, hicimos lo que hacen todos. Ponerles ganas. Comenzamos a subir, luego de una media hora llegamos a un plano, donde las visitantes hacen torres de piedras y piden deseos, algo muy bonito.
The ride was made somewhat complex by the fog and rain, something very common in the city and area. It is the Colombian mountain range, it cannot be different for long. After an hour and a bit more, we arrived at the point of ascent, a waterfall that indicated the beginning of our destination. The Guali hill. The weather was not the best, very foggy and the rain persisted. Gio did not see any problem, nobody did. We knew it could be like that, they more than me. After getting ready to climb, we did what everyone does. We put our hearts into it. We started to climb, after about half an hour we arrived at a plane, where visitors make stone towers and make wishes, something very nice.
El cielo no se despejó como queríamos, pero vimos el amanecer a más de 4.100 metros de altura. La inmensidad ante nuestros ojos, la naturaleza hermosa y la energía que se sentía era increíble. En este punto les aclaro que sólo pudimos subir 5 personas porque en el grupo de Mary había un bebé y el clima no permitió subir con el pequeño. Ellos esperaron mientras Laura, David, Gio, Bryan, Manolo y yo comenzamos a subir la montaña. Gio, nos indicó el camino, y les digo que pensé que yo NO lo lograría. Luego giró instrucciones claras, no alejarse el uno del otro, pisar fuerte e ir con calma. Él por su parte, estaba atento a todos y guiaba con paciencia y prudencia.
The sky did not clear as we wanted, but we saw the sunrise at over 4,100 meters above sea level. The immensity before our eyes, the beautiful nature and the energy we felt was incredible. At this point I clarify that we could only climb 5 people because in Mary's group there was a baby and the weather did not allow us to climb with the little one. They waited while Laura, David, Gio, Bryan, Manolo and I started to climb the mountain. Gio, showed us the way, and I tell you I thought I would NOT make it. Then he gave clear instructions, don't walk away from each other, step hard and go easy. He, for his part, was attentive to everyone and guided with patience and prudence.

Para llegar al punto teníamos que subir por una zona boscosa donde hay muchos frailejones, piedras, un riachuelo y más de una zona con una inclinación que para mí inexperiencia era peligrosa pero Gio nos enseñó cómo subirlas sin peligro alguno y así fue. Ahora que lo pienso, no había peligro pero mi inexperiencia y miedo me estaban jodiendo. Igual decidí hacerlo, no todos los días uno sube al Nevado del Ruiz. David, Laura y yo éramos los últimos, Bryan y Gio iban relajados delante de nosotros, Manolo por su parte, parecía ser el guía de todos. Subía y bajaba con rapidez, siempre pendiente de sus dueños. Los perros son maravillosos y él es fantástico.
To get to the point we had to climb through a wooded area where there are many frailejones, rocks, a stream, and more than one area with an incline that for my inexperience was dangerous but Gio showed us how to climb them safely and so it was. Now that I think about it, there was no danger but my inexperience and fear were screwing me. I decided to do it anyway, it's not every day you climb Nevado del Ruiz. David, Laura, and I were the last ones, Bryan and Gio were relaxed in front of us, Manolo seemed to be the guide of all of us. He went up and down quickly, always looking out for his owners. Dogs are wonderful and he is fantastic.
Mientras subíamos el oxígeno comienza a faltar, así que Laura, David y yo debíamos hacer paradas extras para descansar, comer panelitas y tomar aire. La altura si afecta pero había que subir y yo por alguna extraña razón estaba viendo en cuadros, pero era la aventura y el destino era a casi 4.400 metros de altura. Un especia de mirador natural, un espectáculo maravilloso. Así que fuimos de a poco. En el trayecto yo pensaba en la bajada, todo es muy resbaladizo y créanme que no quería caerme desde muy alto; bueno nadie quiere.
As we climbed the oxygen began to run out, so Laura, David, and I had to make extra stops to rest, eat small panels and get some air. The altitude does affect but we had to climb and for some strange reason I was seeing in pictures, but it was the adventure and the destination was almost 4,400 meters above sea level. A sort of natural viewpoint, a wonderful spectacle. So we went little by little. On the way down I was thinking about the descent, everything is very slippery, and believe me, I did not want to fall from too high; well nobody wants to.
Luego de una hora y media de subir, llegamos al mirador a unos 4.400 metros de altura. Yo casi me muero de cansancio y felicidad, amigos es que estar ahí y ver a Colombia de otra manera te cambia por completo. El frío es rudo, la temperatura es temible a esa altura. Pero estábamos preparados, agua, panelitas, abrigo, gorro, guantes, etc. Ahí nos quedamos largo rato, explorando, riendo y tomando una que otra foto mientras se podía.
After an hour and a half of climbing, we arrived at the viewpoint at an altitude of 4,400 meters. I almost died of exhaustion and happiness, friends is that being there and seeing Colombia in another way changes you completely. The cold is harsh, the temperature is frightening at that altitude. But we were prepared, with water, small panels, warm clothes, hat, gloves, etc. We stayed there for a long time, exploring, laughing, and taking a picture or two while we could.
Luego comenzó la bajada, mi mayor temor. Les confieso que nada se me hizo más largo que esa bajada, todo parecía más inclinado y peligroso. Pero sin duda fue más rápido que subir, tal como lo dijo Gio. Quién nos explicaba sobre la fauna y flora de la zona. También contó sobre la tragedia Armero, donde murieron unas 25.000 personas que justo por donde estábamos bajó el rio que sepulto a un pueblo entero. ¡Panas, eso me asustó más!
Then began the descent, my greatest fear. I confess that nothing was longer than that descent, everything seemed steeper and more dangerous. But it was certainly faster than going up, just as Gio said. Who explained to us about the fauna and flora of the area. He also told us about the Armero tragedy, where 25,000 people died, and that right where we were, the river came down and buried an entire town. Panas, that scared me even more!
Mientras bajamos me caí 6 veces, resbalé por la humedad y nada, terminé emparamado (mojado), con el jeans lleno de fango, las muñecas adoloridas y mi rodilla izquierda haciendo berrinches. Afortunadamente no fue nada grave, golpes de oficio según Gio y que sin duda hicieron el toque chistoso del viaje porque decían que yo limpié el Nevado. Todo fue muy gracioso, en serio que fue genial caerme, lo disfruté. Y estoy seguro que hasta El Nevado gozó con mis caídas. Luego de “hacer cumbre” y salir vivos, decidimos ir a desayunar a Laguna negra, a unos 3.7000 de altura y luego a termales de la gruta: pero eso lo leerán y verán en el próximo post. On the way down I fell 6 times, slipped because of the humidity and nothing, I ended up wet, with my jeans full of mud, my wrists sore, and my left knee throwing tantrums. Fortunately, it was nothing serious, just a few bumps according to Gio, which undoubtedly made the funny part of the trip because they said that I cleaned the Nevado. It was all very funny, seriously it was great to fall, I enjoyed it. And I'm sure even El Nevado enjoyed my falls. After "summiting" and getting out alive, we decided to go to breakfast at Laguna negra, at about 3.7000 altitudes and then to the thermal springs of the grotto: but you will read and see that in the next post.
