Dicen que el primero de los puentes que habrían de constituir uno de los principales puntos de acceso a Madrid, fue mandado construir por el más católico de los reyes, Felipe II, siendo el arquitecto que terminó esa supuesta réplica del Templo de Salomón que es el monasterio del Escorial, el cántabro de la Transmiera, Juan de Herrera, quien lo terminara en 1584.
