Sony Unveil Spatial Reality Display

Sony are on a media spree with a barrage of announcements. As I scrolled through YouTube, I noticed a video by chance on Sony’s channel. The Tech giant have now unveiled a new wave in display technology that goes beyond holograms, its special reality. Now, watching the video at first it was hard to grasp what exactly was going on, but after some time, it became clear as to what Sony was offering. A new way to look at things through a window that delivers spatial awareness. Tracking the senses of the user come into play and the biggest point of this device is deliver a new way to see. We might summarise this as a change in perspective.

Sony have pioneered many technologies in the past and this entry into display technology might not seem relevant to mass consumers right now but it could be a game changer for those working in various industries. With a price tag of $5000, this smaller display is definitely going to serve a niche for now. The use of mirrors and camera tracking is engineering at its finest and it’s impressive how they have packaged this. From the early usage experience I have read online (cred:TheVerge), it isn’t all about the hardware. Software engineering has also allowed the device to provide rapid real time tracking and adjustment of the onscreen images.

This is most likely not aimed at people who want immersive virtual reality experience, but more towards those who have a need to see a different perspective to develop and problem solve with products. It’s another example of technology bridging the gap between the digital world and reality, delivering value through a responsive display. It’s still early days and if it catches on, new use cases and perhaps adaptations will emerge from this. We should remember that Sony have innovated and even if competitors come along, it all started somewhere.
