On 15 September 1890 Agatha Christie was born, a writer who remains the bestselling novelist of all time. Best known for her detective novels featuring iconic characters such as Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot, she also wrote 14 short story collections and the world’s longest running play, The Mousetrap.

She even starred in a real-life mystery of her own when she disappeared for 11 days in 1926 – a case which is still unsolved!

This is the 2020 Gold Proof Agatha Christie £2 coin. This £2 coin was issued by The Royal Mint to celebrate the 100th anniversary since Christie's first novel 'The Mysterious Affair at Styles' was published. The coin has a limited mintage of just 250, and is struck from 0.917 fine gold (22 carat) and weighs a respectable 0.47 troy ounces of the precious shiny yellow metal.

With about £600 worth of gold in it, these coins originally went on sale for £1095. So its a considerable markup on its intrinsic value, but collectors will obviously pay that premium, as the mint has sold 75% of their stock.

Searching an online auction site, i came across just one gold proof coin sold. Selling for just £800, over 20% below retail price, looking back at the RM website, its clear to see why they only sold 75% of their stock. Looks like these coins definitely dont hild their value!! If youre a fan of the books and characters created by Agatha, then this coin is definitely for you, butnif youre looking to make a profit, then youre better off looking to invest in a different coin.
